WORLD TELECOMMUNICATION DAY 2020 – May 17

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day is celebrated worldwide on May 17 every year. Earlier that day was called World Telecommunications Day, but in November 2005, the World Summit of the Information Society called on the United Nations General Assembly to declare May 17 as World Information Society Day. Then, after 2005, this day is known as World Telecommunications and Information Society Day (WTISD). This year is the 50th anniversary of World Telecom Day, first celebrated in 1969. This day is celebrated every year to raise awareness of the importance of communication and focus on raising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and raises global awareness of the use of Internet, information and communication technologies.

History of World Telecom Day

World Telecom Day is celebrated every year since May 17, 1969. The date was chosen because it was the date on which the International Telegraph Union was established. This was when the first International Telegraph Convention was signed in Paris on 17 May 1865. In 1973, the event was formally established at the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Malaga-Torremolinos, Spain. Even during the year, a thematic theme was chosen, celebrating World Telecom Day worldwide.

As to the importance of telecommunications, information technology, and the Internet in particular, it has been recognized that the topic needs to be addressed to the public. Because of this, the World Summit on Information Society (WSIS) requested the United Nations General Assembly in 2005 to declare May 17 as World Information Society Day. The objective was to focus on the importance of these technologies and the various economic and social issues raised by the summit. The United Nations General Assembly decided in March 2006 that World Information Society Day would be held on May 17 each year. However, later that same year, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Antalya, Turkey, decided to combine the two celebrations as World Telecommunications and Information Society Day.

Every year a different theme is chosen to celebrate World Telecommunications Day. The first subject selected in 1969 was ITU: Get to No ITU. Since then, we have had many exciting topics, for example, telecommunications and health, which was the topic of choice in 1981. In 2018, the theme was to enable positive use of artificial intelligence for AI. In 2017, the theme was Big Data for Big Impact. Women and girls in ICT were a defining theme in 2012, and as a 2009 topic, protecting children in cyberspace.
