World Environment Day – History and Theme

World environment day means the celebration of our environmental possessions and this day also provides an opportunity for states, international organisations, non-governmental organisations, corporations, and every human being on the earth to increase their efforts to safeguard the Earth from environmental damage.

Every year, an estimated 7 million people die as a result of air pollution, with the bulk of deaths occurring in all the major regions. This day, which occurs on June 5, promotes global activism. This includes anything from littering to global warming. World Environment Day is a worldwide celebration as well as a forum for public education.

Even the present Coronavirus pandemic has been linked by many climate activists to the planet’s continued destruction. The entire world commemorates Earth Day or world environment day and works to combat the Covid-19 pandemic. The United Nations has declared the theme of this year’s Earth Day to be “Restore Our Earth.”

When was World Environment Day (WED) originally celebrated? – World Environment Day History

World Environment Day- History, Theme, Timeline and Significance

Earth Day was originally observed on April 22, 1970. It became a hot topic after more than 20 million Americans marched to the streets to protest the government’s environmental incompetence. It has become an annual event since then.

On the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972, the United Nations General Assembly declared it as World Environment Day. The first World Environment Day (WED) was observed two years later, in 1974, with the theme “Only One Earth.” Even though the annual Environment Day celebrations have been held since 1974, the concept of rotating the centre of these activities by picking new locations was first proposed in 1987.

The theme of this year’s Earth Day is emerging green and pollution-free technology and creative solutions that can slow down the rate of environmental destruction. The fact that over seven climate-related meetings are being held today, including the Leaders’ Summit on Climate hosted by newly elected US President Joe Biden, is a unique coincidence that celebrates this year’s World Earth Day.

“Earth Day symbolises all we’re trying to do in order to make the globe a better place for future generations. This is something we should be thankful for every day. It’s Earth Day every day many naturalists believe in this.

What is the timeline of World Environment Day from 2010 till now?

world environment day theme

The theme for 2010 was ‘Many Species. One Planet, One Future.’ As part of the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, it was held in Rwanda and honored the diversity of life on Earth. India celebrated World Environment Day in 2011, with the theme Forests—Nature at Your Service. The subject of World Environment Day 2012 was Green Economy. The festivities took place in Brazil. The subject of WED 2013 was themed on the footprint of food, under the slogan “Think, Eat, Save”.

According to the United Nations, one-third of all food produced does not make it from farm to table, resulting in the waste of 1.3 billion tons of food worth $1 billion. This amount would be sufficient to feed the world’s 870 million hungry people while also greatly reducing CO2 emissions.

The year 2014 was dedicated to the sea, with the theme “Raise Your Voice, Not the Sea Level!” to raise awareness about the issues that island nations face as sea levels rise. Milan, Italy, held WED in 2015, with the theme “Seven Billion People. One Planet, Consume with Care.”

WED was the most popular topic on Twitter in more than 20 nations that year. The 2016 edition, hosted by Angola, had the topic “Zero Tolerance for Illegal Wildlife Trade,” while the 2017 edition had the tagline “Connecting People with Nature” to emphasize the critical role we play in protecting the world.

WED has been thoroughly accepted by people all around the world since then, to the point where it’s slowly creeping into pop culture (which we adore!). Celebrities from all across the world are encouraging people to “rescue the world” in their own unique ways.

We often overlook how important natural systems are to our own well-being. We are, nonetheless, a part of nature and rely on it. So today is the ideal time to visit your country’s national parks and commemorate this important connection.

More and more individuals are realizing the importance of managing our planet’s resources and ecosystems in a sustainable manner. That belief is becoming universal rapidly. That is why World Environment Day is so important: it provides an opportunity to promote awareness and make friends and family aware about the fragility and importance of the physical environment.

Contaminants and poisons have become increasingly prevalent in the environment, and these have a negative impact on our health. They have the potential to induce respiratory ailments and cancer, to name a few. World Environment Day motivates us to take action and fix the environment we can’t live without by increasing awareness of issues with the air we breathe.
