Every year on 22 April, Earth Day celebrates the birth anniversary of the modern environmental movement of the 1970s.

First celebrated in 1970, the Earth Day Network features globally coordinated events in over 193 countries.
On Earth Day 2016, the United States, China and 120 other countries signed the Paris Agreement. At the UNESCO conference in San Francisco in 1969, peace activist John McConnell suggested a day in the northern hemisphere to celebrate March 21, 1970 as the first day of spring to honor the Earth and Peace concept. This day of nature was later given a written declaration by McConnell and permission signed by UN Secretary-General Yu Than. A month later, in the United States, Senator Gaylord Nelson established himself as an environmental educator on April 22, 1970. Nelson received a presidential medal in recognition of his work. He persuaded Republican congressman Pete McCloskey with protectionist-mindedness to serve as its co-chair and appointed 25-year-old Harvard-based Dennis Hayes as national coordinator. Hess has created a national staff of 85 members to promote programs across the country.

1990: Earth Day goes global
