World Consumer Rights Day – Learn Consumer Rights In India

World Consumer Rights Day is widely known on March 15 per annum. This is the day to boost global awareness about consumer rights and wishes. World Consumer Rights Day celebrates the rights of all consumers to be respected, protected, and to protest against the abuse of the market and the social injustices that undermine it. The Consumer Movement first marked that date in 1983 and now uses the day every year to take action on important issues and campaigns.


The definition of a consumer rights is “the right to information about the quality, potency, quantity, purity, price and quality of goods or services”, which can, but should, be protected from any improper behavior business, Knowing these rights is very important for users.

Consumer rights in India are:

  • Right to be fully informed about the performance and quality of all goods and services
  • Selection of goods and services
  • Right to be heard in all decision making processes related to customer interests
  • Right to redress whenever consumer rights are violated
  • The right to complete consumer education


The Consumer Protection Act 1986 enforces several laws, such as the Weight Loss, Standards and Measures Act, to ensure that there is fair competition in the market, and that correct information is freely available from goods and service providers. . In fact, the level of consumer protection in any country is considered a true indicator of the country’s progress. Providers of goods and services achieve high levels of differentiation for marketing and sales practices and various promotional activities. . Consumer Court:

It sheds light on the real day of what consumers want and need from the connected world, and how important it is to keep them at the heart of the development of these digital products and services.

Consumer rights broadly mean that every consumer has the right to know the quality, affordability, quantity, purity, price and quality of goods or services.

Under the Consumer Protection Act of 1986, the Indian government gives us six basic rights that every Indian should know. Consumers have the right to choose the product whenever they have the rights, to be safe from all sorts of hazardous materials, to be informed of the performance and quality of all products, and to listen to all decision-making processes related to customer interests. The right to complete consumer education has been violated.



The organization, first referred to as the International Consumer Organization(IOCU), was founded in 1960 by national consumer organizations that want to make cross-border campaigns and share knowledge.

The IOC was later founded by Elizabeth Sheedy, who chairs the board of the Consumer Bond of the Netherlands and Casper Brook, the first director of the Consumer Association of the United Kingdom. The duo proposed an international conference for the purpose of planning consumer product testing organizations around the world. At the request of Colston Warne to fund the event, the United States Organization Consumer Union gave $ 10,000.

In January 1960, the three organizations sponsored the first international conference on consumer inspection at The Hague. Thirty-four individuals representing seventeen consumer organizations in 14 countries participated in product testing and established the International Consumer Organization as an international organization.

Anwar Fazal, a consumer rights activist at the time, was working at Consumer International, which later celebrated a ‘World Consumer Rights Day’ marking the date, and on March 15, 1983, consumer organizations signed up for the fundamental rights of consumers. The date began to be seen as an opportunity to promote.

World Consumer Day is an annual event and solidarity event within the international consumer movement. Participants celebrate the day by protesting against the abuse of the market and the social injustice that weakens them, promoting the fundamental rights of all consumers, demanding that their rights be respected and protected.

The theme for 2018 is Fair Digital Marketplace. Users call for international: 1. Access to fair and secure internet because half of the world is still offline. 2. Action against corruption and fraud. 3. Best public consumer care online.

Consumers seek to make changes in government policy and corporate behavior while raising awareness about international consumer rights and responsibilities. Its campaigns often include issues of consumer justice, protection, food policy, digital consumer rights and sustainability.

Consumer International was established in 1960 with the objective of fighting for a safe, secure and sustainable future for consumers in a global market dominated by international corporations. Addressing President John F. Kennedy’s Congress, he defined his definition of consumer rights. World Consumer Rights Day was established in 1983 to enable citizens to work. Civil action groups play a big role in changing the market. A theme is adopted every year to highlight World Consumer Day. Some of the older subjects include antibiotic resistance and healthy eating. The theme for World Consumer Rights Day 2020, 15 March 2020, will be ‘The Sustainable Consumer’ which will discuss the need for sustainable consumption globally, as well as highlights the important role that consumer rights and protection can play.
