Women empowerment in India – A land of Spirituality has always considered Women with respect, dignity, and equality. If we pick up the history of our country, the post year 1050 AD there were series of invasions on our country and time is marked as the era of aggression and bloodshed. Due to this lot of social norms changed in order to protect and take care of the dignity of women of our country. Yes, this also led many malpractices which impacted the growth of society and specifically the growth of women in these years. This requires a change which can only be achieved by “Women Empowerment” and time for this change is now.
The term “Women Empowerment” refers to empowering women with education, employment, decision making, and better health in view of society with an equal right removing inequalities between men and women. There is an immediate need to take steps to strengthen the social, personal and professional status of women, bringing them shoulder to shoulder with men for the upliftment of the society and mankind
It is true that women have faced discrimination in the society, unfortunately, many of them face exploitation and harassment even today, which can be of diverse types: emotional, physical, mental and sexual. Often we hear of cases of rape, abuse and other forms of physical and intellectual violence, which are scary. Cases like dowry system, sexual harassment, gender bias are some of the many issues which women have to deal with even today. With falling sex ratio in many states of India, social evils like honor killings and denial of basic rights for the proper education and freedom are some of the key issues which have to be still dealt with in many parts of our country.
Many people oppose women education and feel sad when a girl child is born, due to their narrow-minded thought process. This situation needs a change globally and is worst in underdeveloped and developing nations where women in a family are not allowed to take financial decisions or decide on matters regarding their own education and life as a whole.
With the slogan of women empowerment our women have to “Really become stronger” and “ the long term struggle has to get over”. Many programmes have been implemented and run by the government on international women’s day, mother’s day etc in order to bring awareness in the society about true rights and value of the women in the development of the nation. Providing better education and employment opportunities to women, ensuring their better health, providing justice and ensuring professional equivalence, are few methods of women empowerment. The aim of empowering women is to give the same rights to females that are enjoyed by men. For that women empowerment will give equitable power of participation in political affairs too.
Today women hold every political right, to give opinions and be elected as a representative of society. Our constitution has given equal power to women without any discrimination. But a lot needs to be still done. On this Women’s day today India need to really commit that the dark phase of our history is already over and we are back to our original culture of our country where men and women were equal. Women of our country need to follow examples of Maitreyi, Gargi and Rani Laxmibai. We want our women to be educated, strong, committed, responsible and capable of taking independent decisions. Our world has to have many more daughters like Kalpana Chawla, Kiran Bedi, Neerja, Mary Kom.
Our country wants more of Indira Gandhi, Indra Nooyi, Mother Terressa. We should be the country of Miss Universe, Miss World like Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya Rai, Priyanka Chopra. For this thought process need to change. This can only be achieved by making each woman feel empowered. Society should make a safe and restriction-free environment for the woman so that they can comfortably work in their workplace and live a happy and contented life at home.
Women have always played a crucial role of mother, daughter, wife, and sister, so she should be given all the opportunities to live her life fully and contribute to development and growth of our country and society as it was in past. Hence women empowerment is most essential to allow girls and women to live a peaceful, ambitious, respectful and contended life.
“When women will be empowered, the society will be empowered and when society is empowered the nation will be empowered”
