NATIONAL POLLUTION PREVENTION DAY

National Pollution Control/prevention Day is observed on 2 December. This day is to raise awareness about the problem caused by pollution. No doubt. Pollution is a big problem facing the whole world these days. It is necessary to take some action and deal with it.

Pollution is an issue not only in India but the entire world, mainly environmental pollution. Pollution can be spread in any form like solid, liquid, gaseous, or any energy such as heat or environmental sound.

National Pollution Control Day is observed on 2 December every year in memory of the victims of the Bhopal gas tragedy in the year 1984.

There are many factors that can cause pollution such as the bursting of firecrackers, emission from road vehicles, bomb explosions, and gas leaks from industries. Now the problem of pollution is increasing day by day and it is the duty of the government and people to reduce the level of pollution. We need to make plans to control pollution.

Bhopal disaster or Bhopal gas tragedy was due to a leak at Union Carbide India Limited (UCIL) pesticide plant in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on the night of 2-3 December 1984, and more than 5 lakh people were affected by methyl isocyanate (MIC) gas. This is because toxins entered the homes of residents inside and outside the plant. The Madhya Pradesh government had confirmed 3,787 deaths due to the gas leak.

OBJECTIVES

The main objective of National Pollution Prevention Day is to create awareness on the management and control of industrial disasters and to prevent pollution caused by industrial processes or human negligence. National Pollution Prevention Day makes people and industries aware of the importance of pollution control activities.

Its main objective is to make people aware of various polluting industries like water, air, soil, and noise, spread awareness, affect the environment, and clarify health. We should not forget that the poisonous gas leak in the Bhopal gas tragedy was the largest methyl isocyanate (MIC) disaster in the world so far. It is also important to educate people about pollution so that a better or cleaner environment can be created.

As in Delhi, the Indian government has enacted several laws to combat pollution. The number of vehicles plying on the road is decreasing and there is the due implementation of the check points. The Pollution Control Board (NPCB) regularly monitors whether industries comply with environmental regulations.

In India, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), established in September 1974, works for environmental protection and pollution control. It works to promote the sanitation of streams and wells in various states by preventing, controlling, and reducing water pollution. In addition, it works to improve air quality and prevents air pollution in the country.

According to the National Health Portal of India, 7 million people die from air pollution every year worldwide. It states that the situation is worse because nine out of ten people worldwide do not have access to safe air. This shows how disastrous air pollution is.

• The 1979 Three Mile Island disaster at the nuclear US nuclear power plant. The worst disaster in history occurred at a nuclear-producing station on Three Mile Island in Dupin County (near Harrisburg), Pennsylvania.
• Another major disaster in history was the 1986 Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine.
• Another catastrophe after the Bhopal gas tragedy was the Omil gas leak at the Shriram Food and Fertilizers Limited Complex in Delhi.
