“The first post-Independence Commander-in-Chief of India was Kodandera “Kipper” Madappa Carriappa. During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1947, he led India on the Western Front. And is also one of the two winners of the Field Marshal of India award, the other being Sam Manekshaw. Cariappa was from Karnataka and spanned more than three decades in his career. His military service spanned nearly 3 decades. He was one of the first two Indians chosen to study at the Imperial Defense College.
On August 15, 1947, after the oppression of British rule for almost 200 years, India achieved independence. The nation witnessed communal riots at the time of Indian independence, and refugees came from Pakistan and some people moved to Pakistan. Because of this kind of anarchic environment, many administrative problems began to emerge and the army had to come out to monitor the situation in order to ensure stability during partition.
The command of the Indian Army at the time of Indian independence was in the possession of Sir Francis Butcher, the British general. So this was the right time for the Indians to hand over complete control of the land. On 15 January 1949, Cariappa became Independent India’s First Indian Army Leader.
Since this period for the Indian Army was very remarkable, it was decided to celebrate this great day in India every year as Army Day and this tradition has continued ever since. Thus, the transition of army power into the hands of an Indian citizen on 15 January is marked as the country’s Army Day. It is celebrated annually by holding army parades, and several other military displays, at all the headquarters of the Army Command and the national capital.
In order to honour the soldiers of our nation who have set the greatest example of selfless service and brotherhood and, more than anything else, love for the country, Army Day is observed every year at all Army Command headquarters. The country is also paying tribute on this day to the bravery of the brave hearts and thanking them for their selfless devotion. An annual parade at the Cariappa Parade Ground in New Delhi is the showcase event of the Indian Army Day.
Indian Army Day is observed in India every year on January 15, as General K.M. Cariappa became the first Indian to take command of the Indian Army in 1949 on this historic day. Usually, the Army Day parade is conducted at the Parade Ground in Delhi Cantonment, where General Manoj Mukund Naravane, Chief of Army Staff, will be inspecting the parade this year.
As the Parade Adjutant, Captain Tania Shergil of the Corps of Signals will lead in the parade this year. Indigenous firearms such as the Dhanush towed guns will also be on display in the parade. The parade will also have around 18 contingents, where different fighting skills will be demonstrated. At Cariappa Parade Ground, a number of gallantry awards will also be issued. Today is the 72nd Army Day in an independent nation.
