Why do we celebrate National Mathematics Day?

We celebrate the National Mathematics Day on December 22 to mark the birth anniversary of the great Mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujam. He was born in Erode (Tamil Nadu) in the year 1887.

Since his childhood, he had a strong passion for mathematics. So much so that at the age of 12, he had learned trigonometry and created several theorems on his own with no assistance. He was awarded a scholarship to study at Kumbakonam Government Arts College but ultimately lost it because of his abysmal results in other subjects. He ran away from home and enrolled at Pachaiyappa’s Madras College.

While he lacked formal education, he had excelled in trigonometry and had created many theorems. Ramanujan became eligible for a scholarship to study at the Government Arts College, Kumbakonam, after completing secondary school in 1904, but was unable to obtain the same because in other subjects he did not do well.

At 14, Ramanujan ran away from home and enrolled at the College of Pachaiyappa in Madras, where he excelled only in mathematics without succeeding in wading through the remaining subjects.

He had lived his childhood days in great difficulties. In school, he used to borrow books and read books from friends. He took the role of the clerk when he was young to fulfill the economic needs of the family, and when he got the time he used to solve questions in mathematics and worked on different types of theorems. He was fascinated and took a personal interest in engaging in this type of work. When an Englishman saw those pages, he got impressed and he sent Srinivasa Ramanujan to Hardy, a professor at the University of Oxford.

In 1911, his papers were published in the Journal of the Indian Society of Mathematics. Without the help of others, he had collected about 3900 data, mostly identities and equations that were also on his own. Several findings, such as the Ramanujan prime, the Ramanujan theta function, partition formulae, and mock theta functions, are original and novel. Such findings have further influenced many other studies and opened up new fields of work. He discovered his own divergent sequence theory,

As we know different scholars have made important contributions to mathematics since ancient times, including Aryabhata, Brahmagupta, Mahavira, Bhaskara II, Srinivasa Ramanujan, etc. Srinivasa Ramanujan showed the signs of an unfolding genius at a very young age and set a precedent in mathematics with his contributions concerning fractions, infinite series, number theory, mathematical analysis, etc.

The main purpose behind the celebration is to raise people’s awareness of the importance of mathematics to humanity’s progress. We really shouldn’t disregard that many initiatives are being taken among the younger generation of the country to inspire, enthuse, and inculcate a positive attitude towards learning mathematics. On this day, training is also provided to the Mathematics teachers and students through camps which highlight the growth, production, and dissemination of teaching and learning Mathematics.

In various schools, colleges, universities, and educational institutions in India, National Mathematics Day is celebrated. Even UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) and the International Community, came up together to work to spread the learning and understanding of mathematics. In addition, different steps have been taken to educate students in mathematics and to disseminate information to students around the world.

At schools, colleges, and universities, various competitions and mathematical quizzes are conducted. These kinds of programs showcase the mathematical talent of children across the world.

Takshila learning also aims at celebrating the significance of the subject by simplifying and making it easier to be learned. The concepts taught in different ways are provided through modules which makes the learning of Mathematics interesting and enriching. The tables, diagrams, and constructions are taught through live videos for better understanding; they also provide tips and tricks which are essential to get away with the fear of Mathematics. There is online support through Whatsapp and e-mail or through calls with the faculty in case of specific doubts.
