What is the Significance of Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti ?

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti (also known as Govind Singh) is a Sikh festival commemorating the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s birthday. It is a religious festival where prayers are offered for prosperity.

Guru Gobind Singh’s birth anniversary is being celebrated throughout the country by offering prayers and carrying out processions, it is an auspicious day. Guru Gobind Singh, the 10th Sikh guru, was born in Patna. At the age of nine, after the demise of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, the ninth Sikh Guru, he became a Sikh guru.

He established the significance of the Sikh faith and its teachings from the religion for the benefit of mankind. It was he who proclaimed the permanent Sikh Guru to be the Guru Granth Sahib, the Holy Scriptures, and his teachings are also revered by those of other religions.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the son of Guru Tegh Bahadur, gave his life to preserve religious freedom. At nine years of age, he succeeded his father when he became a Guru. The teachings of Guru Gobind Singh Ji had a huge influence on Sikhs. He stood up against the Mughal rulers and fought against injustice during his lifetime. In 1699, Guru Gobind Singh Ji took five men from the lower caste of society and baptized them as His Five Beloveds, giving them great courage and devotion to God.

This led Guru Gobind Singh Ji to create the Khalsa, a military force of saint-soldiers he baptized, through his fearlessness and his desire to protect people from being oppressed. The Khalsa pursued a strict moral code and spiritual discipline under Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s guidance and encouragement. It was through his bravery that the people in India at the time rose against the tyranny of the Mughal emperor.

A strict moral code and spiritual discipline were adopted by Khalsa. Khalsa’s followers must comply with four rules:

The followers should never cut their hair

The followers should never consume meat

The followers should not live with individuals of various castes

The followers should never consume tobacco

The Five K’s tradition of the Khalsa, the five articles of faith that Khalsa Sikhs often wear, was initiated by Guru Gobind Singh:

Kesh: hair that is never cut

Kangha: a comb made of wood

Kara: A bracelet of iron or steel is worn on the wrist

Kirpan: knife or shield

Kacchera: Brief breeches

He was renowned for being a warrior, a poet, and a philosopher. The tradition of wearing a turban at all times covers his contributions to Sikhism. On October 7th, Guru Gobind Singh died from wounds sustained by an assassin. He proclaimed the Guru Granth Sahib, which is the holy scripture of Sikhism, the permanent Sikh Guru prior to his death in 1708.

Devotees from across the country gathered early morning at the Golden Temple in Amritsar to give prayers on the anniversary of the birth of Guru Gobind Singh. Tweeting a video on the occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, “We bow to venerable Shri Guru Gobind Singh Ji on his Prakash Parv.”

On Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, it is popular for major processions to go through markets in India. During the procession, people sing devotional songs and share sweets and a cold drink or a sharbat with the adults and children. There are also special prayer meetings which are held at places of worship known as Gurudwaras.

As part of praising the Guru on his birthday, historical lectures are conducted and poems recited. During the celebrations, special dishes that are exclusive to this occasion are made and served.

Sikhs and even those who don’t identify as Sikh but believe in the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh celebrate by Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti. People celebrating the day go to the Gurudwara, the worship house of the Sikhs, where special prayer meetings are arranged for the day. There are also talks on history: the life, teachings, and influence of Guru Gobind Singh, special lectures on his teachings, and poetry recitals.

People celebrate the day by holding kirtans or celebrating with devotional songs and their near ones, both family and friends. Many families do Seva which is an important part of the Sikh religion’s charitable conduct. They typically prepare food and distribute it to the poor which is one of the best forms of charity.
