What is Rain Water Harvesting and Its Need?

Here we will learn what is Rainwater Harvesting? How to Harvest Rain Water? and Advantages and disadvantages of Rain Harvesting

All living things, including plants, animals, and humans, need water to survive and perform various cellular functions. Have you ever imagined a day without water?

No, we don’t, it’s hard to imagine. We all use water for daily activities such as cleaning, washing, bathing, cooking, drinking, and other household and industrial purposes.

Water is a valuable, essential, and abiotic component of the ecosystem. Today we are all moving towards water scarcity, the main reason for which is the lack of water conservation and pollution of water bodies. So, we cannot waste a single drop of water and start conserving water for further use.

Different methods are used for water conservation and we are learning about the rainwater harvesting system here.

WHAT IS RAIN HARVESTING?

Rainwater harvesting is a simple process or technology used to collect, store and purify rainwater from roofs, parks, roads, open spaces, etc. for later use.

HOW TO HARVEST THE RAINWATER?

A rainwater harvesting system has the following components:

i. Catchment– Used to collect and store captured rainwater.

ii. Conveyance system – It is used to transport the harvested water from the fishery to the recharge area.

iii. Flush – Used to flush misspellings before it rains.

iv. Filter – Used to filter collected rainwater and remove contaminants.

v. Tanks and Recharge Structures: Used to store ready-made filtered water.

The rainwater harvesting process involves the collection and storage of rainwater with the help of artificially designed systems, which artificially repair natural or man-made water bodies such as roofs, compounds, rock surfaces, and mountain slopes, artificial or semi-deformed surface.

Several factors play an important role in the amount of water harvested. Some of these factors are:

i. The quantum of runoff

ii. Catchment Features

iii. Environmental impact

iv. Technology availability

v. Storage tank capacity

vi. Types of a roof, its slope, and its contents

vii. Frequency, quantity, and quality of rain

viii. The speed and ease with which rainwater enters the soil to recharge groundwater.

WHY DO WE HARVEST RAINWATER?

Rainwater harvesting is one of the best practices that can be practiced and followed to help with water conservation. Today, the lack of good quality water has become a major cause for concern. However, clean and quality rainwater can be used for irrigation, washing, cleaning, bathing, cooking, and other livestock needs.

BENEFITS OF RAIN HARVESTING

The advantages of rainwater harvesting system are listed below:

i. Cost reduced

ii. Helps reduce water bills.

iii. Reduces water demand.

iv. Reduces the demand for imported water.

v. Promotes water and energy conservation.

vi. Improvement in quality and quantity of spring water.

vii. No treatment system is required for landscape irrigation.

viii. This technology is relatively simple and easy to install and operate.

ix. It reduces surface water pollution with erosion, stormwater runoff, flooding, fertilizer, pesticides, metals and other debris.

x. It is an excellent source of irrigation water free of chemicals and dissolved salts and free of all minerals.

DISADVANTAGES OF RAIN HARVESTING

In addition to the major benefits, there are also some disadvantages to rainwater harvesting systems such as unpredictable rainfall and the availability of a proper storage system.

Listed below are some of the disadvantages of rainwater harvesting:

i. Requires regular maintenance.

ii. Installation requires some technical skills.

iii. Limited and non-rainwater supply cannot be limited.

iv. If not installed properly, it can attract mosquitoes and other waterborne diseases.

v. A major drawback of the rainwater harvesting system is the storage limit.
