What is gypsum For Class 10 With Properties Of Gypsum

What is gypsum?

Gypsum is a common mineral. Its chemical name is calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).It is found millions of years ago in saltwater underwater layers. When the water evaporated it released the minerals.

Gypsum is mined from debris rocks around the world. It takes the form of crystals, which can sometimes be projected from a rock – making the Old English name a spear stone. Evidence of gypsum base has also been found on Mars.

What is the chemical name of gypsum?

Its chemical name is calcium sulfate dihydrate (CaSO4.2H2O).

Gypsum can be mixed with water and restored to its original rock-like condition. This means it can be more rigid. It has a “closed recycling loop” that can be reused indefinitely while maintaining high quality.

An alternative to natural gypsum is flue gas desulfurization gypsum or FGD gypsum. It is a by-product of coal-fired power plants.

What are the uses of gypsum?

Gypsum is used for the renovation and construction of all types of residential and non-residential buildings. It can be used for very beautiful, contemporary designs and structures, as well as simple everyday objects and processes.

European building interiors use about 5 million tones of gypsum-based plaster every year. European interior surfaces over 1,500 million square meters

Gypsum uses include: wallboard, cement, plaster of Paris, soil conditioning, and hardening of Portland cement. The varieties of gypsum are known as “satin spar” and “alabaster” for a variety of ornamental purposes; however, their low hardness limits their durability.

Some examples of gypsum: –

Plaster board

Plasterboard is used for the partitioning and lining of walls, ceilings, ceilings and floors. Gypsum is an important component of modern plasterboard.

Gypsum fiberboard

Gypsum fiberboard is used for partitions, walls, ceilings, ceilings and floors. Standard gypsum fiberboard is soundproof, as well as good for impact and moisture resistance.

Decorative plaster

This gypsum plaster is known as the Plaster of Paris, which artisans have been using for thousands of years to make decorative moldings and models. Plaster of Paris is now found worldwide, but derives its name from a large gypsum deposit at Montmartre, Paris. Gypsum plaster from Mont mare to Rome was mined, and the mine was used in the mid-19th century.

Building plaster

It is easy to implement with high performance and quick adjustment time that facilitates the construction of the building.

Plaster block

Used for ceiling to indoor partitions and gypsum tiles. Gypsum blocks are easy to install quickly. They are especially used for walls that require a high level of passive fire protection.

Gypsum based self-leveling screws

Anhydride is a white mineral that when mixed with water and flat floors turns into gypsum. These gypsum-based “self-leveling floor screws” provide a quick way to install smooth finished surfaces.

Some unknown facts about Gypsum: –

  • Gypsum is non-flammable and contains crystal water. These excellent properties are used in the manufacture of components that prevent the spread of fire for up to 4 hours.
  • Gypsum provides sound insulation. Gypsum acoustic boards used as part of insulation materials provide a sound barrier between rooms and locations.
  • Gypsum has low thermal conductivity. When using insulation materials for walls and lining, it can trap heat in rooms and buildings.
  • Gypsum can improve the impact resistance of areas that require strong walls, such as school, public buildings, and hospital corridors.
  • Gypsum is easy to install and disassemble. At the end of use it can be reused in completely new gypsum products.
