What are weeds?
We define weeds as plants that grow in growing region (greenhouses, nurseries, farms) but are not part of the actual crop. It contains all the unwanted plants.
Undesirable plants that grow alongside crops are called weeds. These weeds nourish the nutrients supplied to the crops and reduce the supply of nutrients to the crops thereby inhibiting their growth. The growth of these weeds needs to be limited to increase plant growth.
Weeds are sometimes called proper plants. However, weeds are the biggest problem in horticultural production and agriculture. To solve weed problems, we need to know their biology, ecology, and precision. If we know all this, we can act accordingly.
What are the common types of weeds?
We can divide weeds into two subspecies; Annual and perennial. Annual weeds spread only through seeds. They usually have a short growing season with high seed production. The main species are annual grasses (Pova anva), green foxtail (Cetaria viridis) and chickweed (Stellaria media).
Perennial weeds are productive and vegetatively spread. They spread through rhizomes, tubers and stems. As a result, this type is especially difficult to avoid. Even chemical control often proves to be inadequate. Common species of perennial weeds are quackgrass (Elimus rippens), Johnson grass (Sorgam halfpens), dubery (Rubus cicius), and dandelion (Taraxacum officinalis).
What are the symptoms of weeds?
Some features connect and allow weeds to survive. Weeds contain one or more of the following:
- abundant seed production;
- Rapid Population Institution;
- seed dysfunction;
- long-term survival of buried seeds;
- adaptation to expansion;
- presence of vegetative reproductive structures; And
- Ability to capture sites disturbed by human activities.
There are 250,000 species of plants worldwide; About 3% or 8000 of them act as weeds.
Weeds are painful in many ways. Primarily, it reduces crop yields by competing for water, light, soil nutrients, and space. Other issues related to weeds in agriculture are:
- reduce the quality of the crop by contaminating the commodity;
- interaction with the crop;
- Act as hosts to crop diseases or provide shelter for insect’s winter;
- Limit crop rotation and cultural selection Practice; and
- Production of toxic chemicals to crop plants (Allelopathy), animals or humans.
What are the benefits of weeds?
Despite the adverse effects of weeds, some plants that are commonly considered weeds may actually provide some benefits. Some features include:
- Soil stability;
- Habitat and fodder for wildlife,
- Nectar for bees;
- Aesthetic qualities;
- Add organic matter;
- Provide genetic water storage;
- Human consumption; And
- Provides employment.
Weeds are a controversial behavior. For the farmer, they are plants that need to be controlled economically and practically in order to produce food, fodder and fiber for humans and animals. In this case the adverse effects of weeds indirectly affect all organisms.
What is Weeding?
The process of removing weeds is called weeding (weed control). To achieve this, herbicides are used, which chemicals are created specifically to destroy weeds. They are regularly sprayed before sowing and flowering.
What are weed control methods?
Some important weed control methods are listed below
- Weeds can be controlled with herbicides: It is a chemical that is sprayed on the fields to destroy all available weeds. Weeds are not harmful to crops.
- Plowing before sowing also helps in weed control: Weed control Removes weeds. The best time to remove weeds is before flowers and seeds are produced.
- Weed control is a method of weed control. This includes regular weeding or pruning of weeds near the ground.
- Manual method: Weed control by walking in the field.
- Mechanical methods: Trowel use in the field fills the space between the crop rows and cuts or kills weeds.
