World Social Day of Justice or we can say Social Justice Equality Day is observed every year on 20th February with an aim to raise the awareness about the social injustice done across the world, to promote social justice, and to focus on the necessary solutions and improvements which includes the steps to tackle various barriers such as poverty, exclusion, gender equality, unemployment, human rights, and social protections.


Before starting with the topic, first, let’s learn about the Social Justice Meaning;

On June 10, 2008, the International Labor Organization unanimously adopted the ILO Declaration on Social Justice for Fair Globalization. This is the third major statement of principles and policies adopted by the International Labor Council since the ILO incident of 19. It is based on the Philadelphia Declaration of 1944 and 1998, and the Declaration of Rights on Fundamentals and Work. The 2008 Declaration reflects the contemporary vision of the ILO command in the age of globalization.

Announcing this milestone is a powerful confirmation of ILO values. This is the result of a trilateral consultation launched in the wake of the World Commission’s report on the social dimensions of globalization. Accepting this text, representatives of the governments of 182 member countries, employers and trade unions emphasized the vital role of our tripartite organization in helping to achieve progress and social justice in the context of globalization. Together, they are committed to enhancing ILO’s ability to achieve these goals through a work agenda. In this declaration, the concept of decision developed by the ILO to reach constitutional objectives has been institutionalized in accordance with the basic principles of the organization’s policies.

The announcement comes at a crucial political milestone, with a broad consensus on the need for a strong social dimension for globalization in order to achieve good and fair results for all. It establishes a compass as a practical tool to promote fair globalization based on cultured actions and to accelerate progress in the implementation of the agenda for decision-making at the country level. It also reflects a productive outlook, highlighting the importance of sustainable industries in creating greater employment and income opportunities for all.

The General Assembly recognizes that social development and social justice are indispensable for the pursuit and maintenance of peace and security in nations, in which social development and social justice cannot be achieved without peace and security. Without respect for all human rights and fundamental freedoms

It further believes that globalization and interdependence are opening up new opportunities for the development and improvement of living standards worldwide with the development and information technology of the global economy through trade, investment, and capital flows and technological advancements. Over time there are serious economic crises, insecurity, poverty, exclusion, and inequality in societies, and developing countries’ economies with further integration and full participation in the global economy, as well as transitions between some countries.

On November 26, 2007, the General Assembly announced that February 20 would be celebrated every year as a social justice day and would begin the eighth session of the General Assembly.



The World Social Development Summit was held in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1995, and the Copenhagen Declaration and Action Plan were created. The Summit was the largest gathering of world leaders at the time. At the summit, more than 100 political leaders pledged to combat poverty, promote full-scale employment and provide a safer and more sustainable community. She also acknowledged the need to include people at the center of development projects.

Ten years later, at a meeting of the Social Development Commission in New York in February 2005, UN Member States considered the Copenhagen Declaration and Action Plan. Social progress is one of the key commitments made by all its members. Subsequently, the UN General Assembly declared February 20, 2007, a day of social justice. Member States are invited to set aside dates to promote national activities in line with the goals and objectives of the World Summit and the 24th Social Development Session General Assembly.

The United Nations said that job creation, better work standards, and access to employment in the bottom 40 percent of the population could “increase income and contribute to a more integrated and equitable society.” In fact, it helps prevent violent conflicts and address post-conflict challenges.

According to the World Organization, Social Justice Day should support the international community’s efforts for poverty eradication, full employment, and decent work, gender equality, access to social welfare and justice for all.

Various organizations throughout India celebrate this global day. The Institute for Rural Development and Panchayati raj in Hyderabad will hold national seminars on sustainable development and social justice on February 20 and 21.

February 20 is celebrated as the Day of World Social Justice to promote equal rights and opportunities at home and between countries. On November 26, 2007, the General Assembly adopted Social Justice Day every year since 2009 to raise awareness of social injustice around the world. This day we encourage people to see how social justice can affect poverty alleviation, increase employment and bring community integration.

Trade unions and campaign groups can recruit members and supporters. The general slogan of the Russian Trade Union Confederation was “social justice and a decent life for everyone”.

Schools, junior colleges, and universities can prepare for specific activities of the day or plan weekly events around themes related to poverty, social and economic exclusion or unemployment.
