Time and Work Problems Aptitude Questions & Answers
Important Formulas –
- If A can do a piece of work in n days, then work done by A in 1 day = 1/n
- If A does 1/n work in a day, then A can complete the whole work in n days
- If A can do a piece of work in x days and B can do the same work in y days, then A and B together can finish it in xy / (x+y) days
Eg: 1 X can complete a piece of work in 12 days and Y completes the same work in 24 days. If both X & Y work together, then the number of days required by X & Y to complete the whole work will is:
- A) 8 days B) 4 days C) 6 days D) 9 days
Sol: If X can complete a piece of work in a days and Y completes the same work in b days, then, X & Y together can complete the whole work in a b/ a+ b days
Therefore, the required number of days = 12 × 24/ 36 = 8 days.
Answer: Option (A)
- If M1 men do W1 work in D1 days working H1 hours per day and similarly M2 men do W2 work in D2 days working H2 hours per day then,
M1 D1 H1 / W1 = M2 D2 H2 / W2
Eg: 2 If 4 persons can paint 48 m long board in 2 days, then 6 persons paint 36 m long cloth in
- A) 2daysB) 1 day C) 4 days D) 6 days
Sol: M1 D1 / W1 = M2 D2 / W2
So, 4* 2 / 48 = 6* D2 / 36
On Solving, D2 = 1 day
Answer: Option (B)

Eg: 3 12 persons can work 8 hours per day to complete the work in 10 days. To complete the same work in 8 days, working 15 hours a day, the number of persons required is
- A) 4 B) 9 C) 7 D) 8
Sol: Applying M1 D1 H1 = M2 D2 H2
So, 12 * 8 * 10 = M2 * 8 * 15
On Solving, M2 = 8 persons
Answer: Option (D)
- If A is thrice as efficient as B in work, then
Ratio of work done by A and B = 3: 1
Ratio of time taken to finish that work by A and B = 1 : 3
Eg: 4 A is 30% more efficient than B. A can complete a work in 23 days. If A and B work together, then how much time will they take to jointly complete that work?
- A) 10 B) 12 C) 13 D) 14
Work was done by A in 1 day = 1/23
Let the work done by B in 1 day = b
b × (130/100) = 1/23
So, b = 100/(23×130) = 10/(23×13)
Work done by A and B in 1 day = 1/23 + 10/(23×13) = 23/(23×13)= 1/13
Therefore, A and B jointly can do the work in 13 days
Answer: Option (C)
