What is place value?
Every digit in a number has a different value. Since it depends on the place or location of the digit, it is called place value.
For example, in the number 1824, 4 is at the unit place, also known as the ones place, thus its value is 1×4 = 4.
Similarly, 2 is in the tens place, thus its value is 2×10 = 20.
If we have to calculate the value of 8, we can calculate it as 8X100 = 800 since it is in the hundreds place.
The place value of 1 is 1×1000 = 1000 since it is in the thousands place.
Why is place value important?
The concept of place value serves as the foundation for regrouping and multi-digit multiplication. It serves as the starting point for understanding the number base systems.
Place value teaches you the difference between the ten rupees you received from your grandmother and the one hundred rupees you are saving for your favourite toy.
What are the ones, tens, hundreds and thousands?
They all represent the value of the digit in a number.
For example – In the number 7624, the value of 7 is 7000 or we can also say 7 thousand. Similarly, if we have to calculate the value of 6 we can say 600 or 6 hundred. For the place value of 2, we can say 20 or 2 ten. Just like explained in the above example, the value of 4 is 4 or 4 one.
How to identify ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands of place digits?
The rightmost digit in a number is said to have one place value.
The second digit from the right in a number is said to have a ten-place value.
The third right digit has a hundred place value.
The fourth right digit has a thousand place value.
For example, in the number 5432, the digit 5 is in the thousands place because it is the fourth right digit. In the same number the digit 4 is in the hundreds place because it is the third right digit. Similarly, digit 3 is the second digit from the right, thus it is the tens place. In the number 5432, the digit 2 is the rightmost digit and hence it is the ones digit, also known as the unit digit.
