Percentage Practice Problems
Q: 1 A space research company wants to sell its two machines A and B. If the machine A is sold at 20%loss and the machine B at 30% gain, the company will not lose anything. If machine A is sold at 15% loss and machine B at 15% gain, the company will lose Rs. 6 million in the deal. What is the cost of machine B?
(1) Rs. 140 million (2) Rs. 130 million (3) Rs. 110 million (4) Rs. 80 million (5) None of these
Sol: Let the S.P of A and B ‘x’ and ‘y’ respectively.
Given that
0.2x = 0.3y
2x = 3y … (i)
Also,
0.15x – 0.15y = Rs. 6 million
x – y = Rs. 600 million … (ii)
Solving equation (i) and (ii), we get
y = Rs. 80 million.
Hence, the correct answer is an option (4).
Q: 2 The profit by selling an item was 25%. If the item was marked 40% above the selling price then what’s the ratio of the market price to the cost price of the item?
(1) 4/5 (2) 7/4 (3) 6/5 (4) 8/5 (5) None of these
Sol: Let the C.P of the article be 100Rs
So, S.P = 125Rs
Now, M.P = 175Rs
So, required ratio = MP/CP = 175/100 = 7/4
Hence, the correct answer is option (2).
Q: 3 The price of a watch was first increased by 20% and later on the price was decreased by 25% due to the reduction in sales. Find the net percentage change in the final price of Watch.
(1) 20% (2) 25% (3) 40% (4) 10% (5) None of these
Sol: Let the initial price of the watch = 100Rs
After the increase, the price of the watch = 120Rs
Later on, the price of the watch was decreased by 25%
Therefore, its price = 90Rs
The net change in the price = 10Rs
So, Net Percentage change = 10%
Hence, the correct answer is an option (4).

Q: 4 A profit of 8% is made by selling a jean after giving a discount of 12%. If the marked price of the shirt is Rs.1080, find its cost price.
(1) 860 (2) 760 (3) 880 (4) 950 (5) None of these
Sol: Marked Price = Rs.1080
After giving 12% discount on M.P, S.P of the jean = 950.4 Rs
C.P of the jean = 108 % of x = 950.4
= 880 Rs
Hence, the correct answer is option (3).
Q: 5 A mixture of milk and water measures 60 litres which contains 10% water. How much water should be added to it so that water makes 25% in the new mixture?
(1) 12 litres (2) 15 litres (3) 17 litres(4) 9 litres (5) None of these
Sol: Total mixture = 60 litres
Water in the mixture = 6 litres
So, Milk = 54 litres
6 + x = 25% of (60 + x)
6 + x = of (60 + x)
6 + x = 15 +
So, x = 12 Litres
Hence, the correct answer is option (1).
