ANS– Fresh Water is mainly obtained from surface run off and ground water that is continually being renewed and recharged through the hydrological cycle ensuring that water is a renewable resource.

 

ii) What is water Scarcity and what are its main Causes?

ANS– When the demand of water is not enough to match water availability is called water scarcity. It is caused by an increase in population, growing demand for water, uneasy access for different people.

 

      iii)    Compare the advantages and disadvantages of Multi-purpose river projects.

  1. Answer the following questions in about 120 words.
  2. i) Discuss how rainwater harvesting in semi-arid regions of Rajasthan is carried out.

ANS– In the semi-arid and arid regions of Rajasthan, particularly in Bikaner, phalodi and barmer, almost all the houses traditionally had underground tanks for storing water. The tanks could be as large as big rooms. They were connected to the sloping rooftops of the houses through pipe. Rain falling on the rooftops would travel down the pipe and was stored in tankas. The first spell of rain was usually not collected as this would clean the roofs and the pipes the rain water was then collected.

 

 

  1. ii) Describe how rain water modern adaptations of traditional rain water harvesting methods are being carried out to conserve and store water.

ANS– In many parts of rural and urban parts of India, rooftop rainwater harvesting is being successfully adapted to store and conserve water. In Gendathur, a remote backward village in Mysore, Karnataka, Villagers have installed, in their household’s rooftop rain water harvesting system meet their water needs. Tamilnadu is the first and only state in India which has made rooftop rainwater harvesting structure compulsory to all houses across the state.
