Question 1:
How did Jody bring the fawn back home?
Answer:
Jodi didn’t want to scare Fawn. This is why he first gently shook his neck, and then put his arms around it. Then, he picked her up and carried them through thick bushes. He tried to shield his face with sharp vines. He stopped on the way to his house. Walking a little farther, he saw Fawn behind him. After this, he will either take the fountain, or put it down so that he himself will follow it. When they reached home, they refused to climb the stairs. Then he picked her up and took her inside the house.
Question 2:
Jody was filled with emotion after he found the fawn. Can you find at least three words or phrases which show how he felt?
Answer:
Jodi was filled with emotion after she found Vanguard. When he twisted his neck, the touch made him ‘fragile’. When he realized that this was now his pawn, he was ‘light-headed with happiness’. When he finally brought Fawn into the house, Penny thought “the boy’s eyes were as bright as Fawn’s”.
Question 3:
How did the deer drink milk form the gourd?
Answer:
The deer drank milk from Jodi’s hands. When Jadi gave milk to Fen in the gourd, he suddenly drank milk and started sniffing the milk and did not know what to do with the milk in the gourd. It was then that Jody dipped her fingers in the milk and pushed them into Fawn’s soft wet mouth, so that he would drink the milk.
Question 4:
Why didn’t the fawn follow Jody up the steps as he had thought it would?
Answer:
Deer is a wild animal. It is used for life in the forest. When Mohra arrived at Jody’s house, he did not follow the steps due to the strangeness of the house and the steps and everything. This is similar to the reaction of milk in the gourd. It simply did not know what to do.

Question 1:
Why did Penny Baxter allow Jody to go find the fawn and raise it?
Answer:
Penny allows Jodie to find Fawn and wake him up, as he is ungrateful for leaving Fawn hungry. He agrees with Jodi that they killed Doe for his own purpose and that Fenn is orphaned through no fault of his own. They could not let Fawn starve. He felt a responsibility towards it.
Question 2:
Why did Doc Wilson mean when he said, “Nothing in the world ever comes quite free”?
Answer:
Penny killed Doe to save his life. Therefore, in relation to what Doe had done, his pawn needed to be cared for and saved from starvation. This is what Doc Wilson meant when he said that nothing in the world came for free.
Question 3:
How did Jody look after the fawn, after he accepted the responsibility for doing this?
Answer:
When John accepted the responsibility of taking care of the pawn, he cared for it as his own mother would. On his way home, he covered his face with sharp vines. He took her in his arms even when tired. On reaching home, he gave her the milk that was meant for her. When he saw that the fakir did not drink milk kept in the gourd, he fed it with his hands. Therefore, one can say that Jodi performed her responsibility well.
Question 4:
How does Jody’s mother react when she hears that he is going to bring the fawn home? Why does she react in this way?
Answer:
When Jody’s mother heard that she was going to bring Fawn home, she was a little surprised and asked Jody what Fawn she was talking about. He then tells her that it was the pawn whose mother killed her to save Penny. He said that they have nothing else to feed it and only milk can be given to it. She reacted this way because she was not present at the site where Penny was bitten, where they killed Doe. He had not seen Fawn and was, therefore, not as worried as Penny and Jody.
