(ii) What did young Ernest wish when he gazed at it?

Answer:

(i) The Great Stone Face was an act of nature. It was built on the perpendicular side of the mountain by some huge rocks that were thrown together so that when viewed at a reasonable distance, they resembled the features of a human face.(ii) Looking at the Great Stone Face, the young Ernest wished that it could speak because it looked so polite that he felt its voice should be pleasant. He also said that if he ever saw a man with such a face, he would love her very much.

Question 2:

What was the story attributed to the Stone Face?

Answer:

The story given to Stone Face was that someday in the future, a child would be born there, and he would become the greatest and gullible person of his time. His face is, in manhood, similar to the Great Stone Face.

Question 3:

What gave the people of the valley the idea that the prophecy was about to come true for the first time?

Answer:

People came to know that the prophecy was going to come true from a rumor which had gone all over the valley. Rumor had it that the great men, who resembled the great stone face, had finally appeared. Many years ago, a young man named Gathergold left the valley and settled at a distant port. He had established himself as a shopkeeper and was fast in business affairs, had become so wealthy that it would have taken him only a hundred years to count his wealth. Over time, he thought about his native valley, and decided to go back there and end his days where he was born. People believed that it was a prophetic man.

Question 4:

(i) Did Ernest see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face?

(ii) Who did he confide in and how was he proved right?

Answer:

(i) No, Ernest did not see in Gathergold the likeness of the Stone Face.

(ii) He believed in the Great Stone Face. When everyone else believed that Gathergold resembled Stone Face, he got away from that unpleasant face wrinkle and stared at the valley, where Stone Face said “He will come!” Fear not, Ernest; Man will come! “He was proved right when Gathergold later died and was buried. His wealth, which was the body and soul of his existence, disappeared before his death. Ever since he lost his gold, it was generally agreed that there was no resemblance between him and the majestic face on the mountain.

Question 5:

(i) What made people believe General Blood-and-Thunder was their man?

(ii) Ernest compared the man’s face with the Stone Face. What did he conclude?

Answer:

(i) People believed that General Blood-and-Thunder was his man as he became a soldier many years ago. After heavy fighting, he became a famous general. He had recently expressed a desire to return to his old valley because he was old and tired. Preparations were made to welcome him. That being said, after all, the resemblance to the Great Stone Face actually appeared. When they saw him, they could see the resemblance and make sure that he was the man because they believed he was the eldest man of that or any other age. (ii) When Ernest compared the man’s face with the stone’s face, he concluded that there was no resemblance. If there was such an analogy as a crowd, Ernest could not recognize it.
