“For a moment James wondered if he had done his sums right.” Why was James doubtful about his sums and calculations?

Answer:

James became suspicious of his sums and calculations when he looked through his window and saw a sky star at night. He knew that Comet Dutta was also among those stars, which were moving towards hitting the Earth. It was hard for him to believe the future disaster in such a peaceful night.

What did the scientists at the conference say about James’s ‘sums’?

Answer:

Scientists said that James’ ‘amount’ was correct and that no direct hit by him could have survived. There was a small chance that the comet could just catch the Earth’s atmosphere and not collide. In that case, loss of life and property will not be total. However, this was hardly convincing. Therefore, he decided to take some action.

Answer:

The defensive action discussed by the scientists was to live in underground bunkers. The offensive action was to partially distract the comet by giving it a push from its path. It can be sent by placing a nuclear payload in a spacecraft, stopping a comet that fires it, and detonating it by remote control.

Question 4:

“I am not buying any Christmas presents till December 15.” What did Sir John mean by that?

Answer:

Sir John meant that he was not very confident that he would succeed in his operation. December 15 was the date when the comet would hit Earth if the experiment failed.

Answer:

Dattada was expected to perform the Shanti Yagya on her return from London. This yajna was to be performed to calm the bad feeling behind the comet.

Answer:

Duttda’s reacted angrily to the proposal and said that it was all superstition. He also said that such superstitious behavior could be understood in olden times because back then humans did not know the true nature of comets. However, in modern times, such behavior was unacceptable. He said that it was clearly established by statistical studies that his travels have no connection with disasters on Earth.

Answer:

i) Project Light Brigade was the code name for the operation that scientists were carrying out to prevent a comet collision with Earth. The project included the induction of a nuclear payload into a spacecraft, intercepting nearby comets, and detonating it by remote control. December 15 was the date that if the experiment failed, the comet would hit the Earth. However, if it did not, the comet would have passed a close but safe distance.ii)           In his letter to Dattada in October, Sir John stated that the charge of the Light Brigade had begun and he had the best hope. This meant that the spacecraft with a payload was launched in time.

Answer:

Yes, Sir John bought Christmas presents on 15 December. Dutt learned about it in the letter that Sir John had written to him saying that he was confident about buying Christmas presents on 15 December, indicating that the project was successful.

Why, according to Indrani Debi, had the comet not been disastrous? Do you agree with her?

Answer:

According to Indrani Debi, the comet did not prove to be disastrous due to the yajna performed at his house.No, the yajna had no effect on the comet. The project by the scientists prevented the comet from hitting the Earth, saving the Earth and all its inhabitants from destruction.
