Answer:

Indrani Debi disliked Dattadas’s “hubboing” with Dutt because to her the telescope was like a designing woman who had abandoned her husband.

Answer:

Answer:

i) Dattada’s secret ambition was to one day discover a new comet.(ii) Dattadas knew that he only had an eight-inch telescope, which was much smaller than that of professional astronomers. He also knew that he had little chance of fulfilling his ambitions. Nevertheless, he was optimistic and he was firm. He would sit with his small telescope every night and stare at the stars, believing that one day a comet would be discovered.

What is the difference between a planet and a comet, as given in the story?

Answer:

Like planets, comets also orbit the Sun, but their orbits are highly eccentric. Once in a while, a comet comes close to the Sun. It has a long tail that is brilliantly lit by sunlight, and is then reclaimed in darkness, not seen again for years or centuries.

Question 5:

Why was Duttada hopeful that he would discover a new comet soon?

Answer:

Dattadas hoped he would soon discover a new comet because he knew that professionals with their pre-planned schedules would be looking at faint stars and misty galaxies. They can remember such a trivial thing as a comet, which they would not expect to see. Amateurs often discovered new comets, which were recalled by professionals.

Why does Duttada say—“I almost wish I had not discovered this comet.”?

Answer:

Dattada said that he almost wished that he had not discovered the comet as it brought unpleasant publicity to him. There were many receptions and ceremonies in which he was to attend. He was an introvert and such a lifestyle was not to his liking.

Why is his wife unhappy about the discovery?

Answer:

His wife was unhappy with the discovery because he believed that comets brought misfortune, and he wished that a good man like Dutt should not be associated with such a discovery.

The important point that the paper made was that Comet Dutta would collide with the earth.

Why does Sir John say that James’ paper should not be published?

Answer:

Sir John said that the paper should not be published because if the world came to know about the inevitable collision, it would cause panic.

What do the two men finally decide to do?

Answer:

The two individuals eventually decided to air the news of the confrontation by adding a lot of ifs and butts to the paper, so that the conclusions would not seem too definitive. Also, they decided to arrange an urgent meeting of experts from all over the world to think counter-measures.
