Why didn’t he pay the school fees on the day he brought money to school?

Answer:

He did not pay the school fees on the day he brought the money to the school because Master Ghulam Mohammad (the fee-paying teacher) was on leave, and it would be collected the next day.

(i) What were the coins ‘saying’ to him?

(ii) Do you think they were misguiding him?

Answer:

(i) Coins were asking him to buy jalebiyas. He said nothing was coming out for those fresh, hot jalebis. Jalebis were for eating, and only those with money in their pockets could eat them. He also said that the money was meant to be spent, and only those who liked Jalebis spent it.(ii) Yes, they were misleading him. Even though the money was for the payment of fees, he urged her to spend it on jalebis.

Question 3:

Why didn’t he take the coins’ advice? Give two or three reasons.

Answer:

He did not take the advice of coins because he was a good boy. He knew that the coins were misleading him. He said that he found so much at home that he also considered it a sin to see something in the market. Also, the coins were his fees. If he spent them that day, he would not be able to show his face to Master Ghulam Mohammed the next day at school, and then to God. He also said that when Master Ghulam Mohammad got angry, he made the students stand on the bench, until the last bell rang. Therefore, he decided not to consult the coins.

Question 4:

(i) What did the oldest coin tell him?

(ii) Did he follow his advice? If not, why not?

Answer:

(i) The oldest coin stated that they were trying to tell him something for his own good. It said that he would receive scholarship money the next day, and with that money he could pay his fees. Therefore, he could buy jalebis very well with the fee money.(ii) No, he did not follow its advice. Even though his mouth was watery, he remembered that he was one of the most promising students in the school. In the fourth standard examination, he had also won a scholarship of four rupees a month. In addition, he came from a particularly good family and enjoyed considerable prestige. He was not beaten even once. In contrast, his teacher beat him to other boys. He thought it was inappropriate for a child in such a situation to stand in the middle of the market and eat jalebis. Giving these reasons, he returned home.

Question 5:

He reached home with the coins in his pocket. What happened then?

Answer:

When he reached home, the coins started speaking again. When he went inside to have lunch, he shouted. He was fed up so well that he left the house barefoot and ran towards the market. Although he was nervous, he quickly asked for the full amount of Jalebis. The confectioner opened the entire newspaper and put a heap of jalebis on it.

(ii) What did he do with the remaining jalebis?

Answer:

(i) He did not eat all the jalebis he had bought because he had eaten so many of them that if someone bit his stomach, the jalebis would have come out of his ears and nose.(ii) He distributed the remaining jalebis to the children who had gathered in the street where he was eating jalebis.

Question 2:

“The fear was killing me.” What was the fear?

Answer:

Fear was about to be caught and his parents found out that he had eaten too many burns. He was buried with every breath. There was a danger of bringing out Jalebi or two with every burqa. This fear was killing him.

Question 3:

“Children’s stomachs are like digestion machines.” What do you understand by that? Do you agree?

Answer:

This means that children have a very good digestive system. They can eat as much as they can, and their stomach digests the food easily.

Question 4:

How did he plan to pay the fees the next day?

Answer:

He planned to pay the fees with the previous month’s scholarship that he would get the next day.

Question 5:

When it is time to pay the fees, what does he do? How is he disobeying the elders by doing so?

Answer:

When it was time to pay the fee, he pressed his bag under his arm and left school. He kept on walking, praying for some miracle to happen once he survived. He reached Kambelpur railway station. The elders warned them never to cross the railway tracks. He also warned her that sweets should never be eaten with the money of one’s fee. However, he disobeyed her by doing so.

Discuss the following points.

• Is the boy intelligent? If so, what is the evidence of it?
• Does his outlook on the jalebis episode change after class VIII? Does he see that episode in a new light?
• Why are coins made to ‘talk’ in this story? What purpose does it serve?

Answer:

(i) Yes, the boy was intelligent. In school, he was one of the most promising students. In his fourth standard examination, he had won a scholarship of four rupees a month. On the day he had to pay his fees, he was also going to get the scholarship of the previous month. Furthermore, he had never been absent from school.(ii) Till eighth grade, he kept thinking that if someone sent four rupees to God on that day, what harm could it do. However, later, they came to the conclusion that if God provided for everyone to ask, the man would still be living in nests like vultures and crows, and he would not have learned the art of making jalebis. By this, he meant that no man would make any effort if God gave him everything he wanted.(iii) To show the greedy nature of the boy, the coins in the story are made for the story. His good nature, which prevents him from spending money on jalebis, comes across as the words he utters. Their greed, which was causing them to get jalebis and eat them, was brought out in the words spoken by the coins.

What was the consequence of buying jalebis with the fees money?

Answer:

The result of buying jalebis with the fee money was that for the first time in life he was absent from his school.

Question 2:

His prayer to God is like a lawyer’s defence of a bad case. Does he argue his case well? What are the points he makes?

Answer:

He did not argue well. He was mostly trying to impress God and make promises. He said that he had missed the entire Namaz. Even he knew the last ten suras of the Quran by heart. He said that he was a devoted servant of God and needed fee money. He admitted his mistake. However, in his defense, he also stated that he did not eat all the jalebis. He shared them with other children. He promised that he would never eat sweets with fee money again and if he did, he would be entitled to the thief’s punishment. He said that there is no lack of anything in the treasure of God. Even the peon used to get a lot of money for his work. He finally said that he was the nephew of an elder officer and therefore, God should give him money as he only asked for four rupees.

Question 3:

He offers to play a game with Allah Miyan. What is the game?

Answer:

The game was that he would go from where he stood for the signal. Then, God secretly put four rupees under a big rock. Meanwhile, he touches the signal and comes back. Then, when he picked up the rock and found four rupees below.

Question 4:

Did he get four rupees by playing the game? What did he get to see under the rock?

Answer:

No, he did not get four rupees playing the game. When he picked up the rock, he saw a large-haired worm, twisting and twisting it.

Question 5:

If God had granted his wish that day, what harm would it have caused him in later life?

Answer:

If God had expressed his wish on that day, he would never have learned from his mistake. He must have continued such wrongdoings, believing that God would save him after his persuasion.
