His sister had given him letters of introduction from the people living there because no one knew him there. She knew that he would not talk to anyone and that his nerves would worsen from being ruptured. So he gave her letters of introduction to all the people he knew.

What had happened in the Sappleton family as narrated by the niece?

Answer:

The niece told Nuttel that about three years ago Mrs. Sappleton’s husband and his two younger brothers had gone for their daytime shooting through an open French window. They never returned. In crossing the swamp to their favorite shooting spot, they all indulged in a piece of swamp. It was a scorching heat and in other years safe places were suddenly given way without warning. Their bodies were never recovered.

Answer:

Mrs Sappleton said she hoped Framton didn’t mind the open window. She told him that her husband and her brothers would come straight home from her shoot, and they always came the same way.

Answer:

When Framton looked back, he saw three twilight figures walking across the lawn towards the window. They all held guns under their arms and one of them also had a white coat on his shoulder. A tired brown spaniel placed close to his heels. They nearer the house, and then a hoarse young voice said, “I say, Bertie, why do I force it?”

Is this a mystery story? Give a reason for your answer.

Answer:

Explaining the mystery behind the open French window, the events narrated by Mrs. Sapleton’s niece evoke a sense of foreboding. Later, when three people approach the open window, readers (like Framton) can only logically conclude that they were ghosts. Therefore, one can say that there are mysterious elements in this story.

You are familiar with the ‘irony’ of the situation in a story. (Remember The Cop and the Anthem in Class VII Supplementary Reader!) Which situations in ‘The Open Window’ are good examples of the use of irony?

Answer:

Framton Nuttel had retired from the country and was visiting various people to heal his bad nerves. However, her visit to Mrs Sappleton’s house was the exact opposite. The trip made her lose her nerves completely. This is the most ironic part of the story.When Mrs. Sapleton tells her that she was waiting for her husband and her three brothers, who were to arrive at any time, Nuttell senses that she is in confusion. However, ironically, he was confused when he saw three men as ghosts. When Nuttell fled, Mrs Sappleton said that the way he ran wildly, it seemed as if he had seen a ghost. Ironically, he escaped because he thought he saw ghosts.

Why did Framton rush out wildly?

Answer:

Framton escaped wildly as he was in “a cold shock of fearless fear”. He is frightened and shocked to see the three men, who thought they were dead, walking towards the open window.

Question 2:

What was the girl’s explanation for his lightning exit?

Answer:

The girl stated that the spaniel was the reason for her running out of electricity. He said that he has a panic of dogs. He told that he was once hunted by a pack of dogs in a cemetery on the banks of the Ganges. He was to spend the night in a newly dug grave, in which creatures pounced, smiled and quarreled over him.
