Velu stood on the platform but he felt “as if he was still on a moving train”. Why?

Answer:

Velu was standing on the platform, but felt that he was still on a moving train as his legs were staggering even after his trip to Chennai. The effect of a moving train usually lasts for some time after the end of the journey.

Question 2:

What made him feel miserable?

Answer:

Velu felt unhappy and exhausted as he had fled his village two days earlier and had eaten nothing but some peanuts and jaggery pieces for the past two days.

Answer:

Answer:

Velu had run away from home because his father used to beat him daily. His father also used to spend the money earned by Velu and his sisters on drinking.

Why did he decide to follow the ‘strange’ girl?

Answer:

He decided to follow the ‘strange’ girl as he did not know where to go and what to do. Originally, he had no plans for himself.

Can Velu read Tamil and English? How do you know?

Answer:

Velu could read Tamil but not English. When he saw the huge signboard, he could not understand what it meant because the writing was in English. Later, when the girl pointed to a large building, Velu read the Tamil sign and came to know that the building was Central Jail.

Question 2:

“If you are not careful, you will soon be counting bars there,” the girl said.

(i) What is she referring to?

(ii) What does she mean when she says “If you are not careful…”?

(She says something a little later which means the same. Find that sentence.)

Answer:

(i) She was referring to Central Jail.(ii) When he told Velu that “if you are not careful …”, he meant that he should not be caught. All he had to do to stay away from jail was do nothing stupid and catch the policemen.

Question 3:

(i) Where did the girl lead Velu to?

(ii) What did they get to eat?

Answer:

(i) The girl took Velu to Sri Rajarajeshwari to the happy Kalyan Mandapam. A marriage was taking place there. He took her to the back of the hall near a large trash can, which was overflowing with rubbish.(ii) Velu got a banana and vada, while the girl got only one banana to eat.

What work did she do? Think of a one-word answer.

Answer:

She was a ragpicker.

(ii) Why does Velu find them strange?

Answer:

(i) The ‘strange’ huts were made of metal sheets, tires, bricks, wood and plastic.(ii) Velu found the huts strange because the houses in his village were made of mud and palm leaves. The huts she saw were made of all sorts of things and it seemed that they might collapse at any moment.

What sort of things did Jaya and children like her collect and what did they do with those things?

Answer:

Jaya and the children love her collected paper, plastic, glass, and other such things. He sold these items to Jaime Bazaar Jaggu, who further sold it to a factory.

Question 3:

Is Velu happy or unhappy to find work? Give a reason for your answer.

Answer:

Velu was unhappy to get work as he did not run away from the house to dig through the litter box. The only work he ever did was to take the cows out to graze. However, since he did not know Chennai very well, he decided to work as a ragpicker until he got a better job.

Is Velu a smart boy? Which instances in the text show that he is or isn’t?

Answer:

Yes. Velu seems a smart guy.He had fled the house due to bad conditions. When they reached Chennai, the girl, who was about to tear it up, tried to help him. Initially he thought of not taking her help. However, he was smart enough to realize that he was very hungry and did not know where to go. Therefore, he followed the girl. He knew to read Tamil. When the girl asked him to eat a banana that he found in the trash, he refused at first. However, he quickly realized that he was very hungry and, therefore, ate it. Even though she found a place and even the girl felt very strange, she continued to walk with him. He tried to understand why he collected rubbish. He knew that he did not come to the big city to collect rubbish; However, he kept pace with the situation and decided to do the same thing until he got a better job.

Question 2:

Do you think Jaya is a brave and sensitive child with a sense of humour? Find instances of her courage, kind nature and humour in the text.

Answer:

Yes, Jaya was a brave and sensitive child.She was a Ragini and knew how to live in the city. Jaya knew her way around Chennai, which is quite a big city. Where Velu was extremely upset and confused about crossing the busy road, Jaya dragged him and crossed the road fast. She was a brave girl. She knew where to get food. She knew that one would have to be careful not to get caught by the police.Jaya was also a very sensitive and kind girl as she helped Velu in every way possible. She understands that she has run away from home because she has seen many people like her. She also understood that he is hungry. He helped her cross the road and got her something to eat. Then, he also told her how she could earn her money. He also gave her an empty sack and a pair of shoes for this purpose.Jaya too had a humorous nature. When he saw Velu sitting on the stage, he asked her if she was there to become rich. When Velu was not able to cross the road, he dragged her to the other side of the road and said, “What do you think you are doing?” Cows grazing? If you stand in the middle of the road like this, you will get chutney. “When Velu asked him if they were going to have dinner in the hall where the wedding was taking place, he replied” hops “! Answer:

Yes, this story suggests that the thing that might be valuable to others throws up. People throw empty bottles, paper and broken glass as useless because these things are not used for them. Jaya and other children like them collect these items and other such things and make a living by selling them to others. People throw away food that is extra or rotting. At weddings, a lot of food is wasted and goes to the trash can. These poor children eat from the compartment and satisfy their hunger. Old shoes and torn clothes, which people throw away after use, are a great help for poor people like these children. In the story, Velu’s feet were burning due to extreme heat. Jaya gave him an old pair of shoes with no laces, which protected his feet somehow.We can say that this story shows in more ways than one that the thing that becomes worthless can be valuable to others.
