Question 1: Why is Bholi’s father worried about her?

Answer: Bholi’s father was worried about him because he neither had good looks nor intelligence. He did not know how he would find a worthy groom for him.

Question 2: For what unusual reasons is Bholi sent to school?

Answer: The Tehsildar had inaugurated the primary school for girls who had just opened in Ramlal’s village. He told Ramlal that when he was the representative of the government in the village, he should send his daughters to school and set an example for the villagers. When Ramlal discussed the matter with his wife, he said that if the girls were sent to school, no one would marry them.Since Ramlal did not dare to disobey the Tehsildar, his wife suggested that they send Bholi to school. She felt that since she had very little chance of getting married due to her ugly face and lack of understanding, she could go to school.

Answer: Bholi got everything new in school. She was happy to see many girls of her age present there. She was captivated by the bright colors of the paintings on the walls. Question 1: Why do Bholi’s parents accept Bishamber’s marriage proposal?

Answer: Bholi’s parents felt that if she did not accept Bishambar’s proposal, she could remain unmarried throughout her life. Her mother said that they were fortunate that Bishambar belonged to another village and therefore did not know the naïve pock-marks and lack thereof. Apart from this, he did not even ask for any dowry. Therefore, Bholi’s parents accepted the marriage proposal.

Question 2: Why does the marriage not take place?

Answer: The marriage did not take place as Bholi refused to marry Bishambar. When the groom saw that his face was covered with pock-marks, he announced that he would marry her only when his father gave him a dowry of five thousand rupees. Despite repeated pleas by Ramlal, Bishambar did not turn from his stand. Finally, Ramlal placed the dowry amount at the feet of the groom. As a result, when Bishambar was about to put the garland around Bholi, he killed his hand and the garland scorched in the fire.She said that she was willing to marry the man only because of her father’s honor. However, upon seeing that the man was greedy and abusive, he decided not to pursue the marriage.

Question 1: Bholi had many apprehensions about going to school. What made her feel that she was going to a better place than her home?

Answer: Bholi felt she was moving from her home to a better place when she received treatment she had never received before. New clothes were never made for Bholi. His sisters’ old clothes were given to him. Nobody cared to wash or wash her clothes. However, before being sent out of school, she received a clean dress. He was also bathed, and oil was rubbing into his dry and tangled hair. This was when she began to believe that she was being moved from her home to a better place.

Question 2: How did Bholi’s teacher play an important role in changing the course of her life?

However, he later refused to marry her because he saw how greedy and abusive he was. Demanding a hefty dowry, he took advantage of his bad looks and his father’s frustration and married him. That is why he rejected the marriage and silenced everyone else who called him shameless.This tells us that Bholi had grown confident and could speak very well for himself.

Question 4: Bholi’s real name is Sulekha. We are told this right at the beginning. But only in the last but one paragraph of the story is Bholi called Sulekha again. Why do you think she is called Sulekha at that point in the story?

Answer: Sulekha was called naive because everyone considered her a backward child and an ordinary person. Thus the name Bholi is a symbol of his confidence and ignorance. After mentioning his real name at the beginning of the story, the author only mentions it in the second-last paragraph. There is a deliberate attempt on the part of the author to show that Sulekha has finally attained her true identity by removing the veil that disguises her personality.
