Question 2: Who befriends him? Where does he take him?
Answer: The lawyer was befriended by a delivery man who introduced himself as Bill. He told her that he knew Lutkins and would help the lawyer find him. He took her to all the places where Lutkins was seen or was known to hang out. He took the lawyer to the Fritz shop,Where Lutkins played a lot of poker; To Gustaf’s Barbershop and then to Gray’s Barbershop; Before finally taking her to Oliver’s mother’s farm at the pool and various other locations. However, Oliver Lutkins was not found.

Question 1: When the lawyer reached New Mullion, did ‘Bill’ know that he was looking for Lutkins? When do you think Bill came up with his plan for fooling the lawyer?
Answer: It is more likely that Oliver planned to fool the lawyer as he later found out that he was looking for a man named Oliver Lucins. Oliver knew that he was needed as a witness in a law case. It is therefore entirely possible that he was prepared for such a situation. This was the chance that the lawyer ran to Oliver himself.
Question 2: Lutkins openly takes the lawyer all over the village. How is it that no one lets out the secret? (Hint: Notice that the hack driver asks the lawyer to keep out of sight behind him when they go into Fritz’s.) Can you find other such subtle ways in which Lutkins manipulates the tour?
Answer: Lutkins was always the first to enter the places where he took a lawyer. He prevented the lawyer from speaking directly to the people at these places. In this way he would have taken them into his faith. Perhaps this is why no one let the secret come out. After Fritz did not find Lutkins, he went to Gustaf’s barber shop, where he again went to the first bar and the lawyer stepped on the door. Before Lutkins ‘mother went home, he gave a gruesome description of Lutkins’ mother and urged the lawyer to try and talk to her. Again, Luckins was the one who went to him first. The lawyer only stood back and listened. He told her all about the lawyer and why he had come, which was enough clue for him to understand what was going on. It should also be noted that at the station, he had asked the lawyer if he was in a hurry to find Lukins. The lawyer tells him that he has to catch the afternoon train back to the city. Perhaps this helped him fulfill his plan to get a lawyer around the city until he had time to get the train back to the city. In this way, he always remained ahead of the lawyer and managed to manipulate the entire tour.
Question 3: Why do you think Lutkins’ neighbours were anxious to meet the lawyer?
Answer: Lutkins took all the lawyers of New Million to search for Lutkins himself. He successfully fooled an educated man-lawyer of the city. During this process of deception, almost all the people of the city came to see the lawyer. The episode would become the city’s talking point. According to Lutkins, his neighbors were the only people in the city who had missed seeing the lawyer and, therefore, wanted to meet the lawyer.
Question 4: After his first day’s experience with the hack driver the lawyer thinks of returning to New Mullion to practise law. Do you think he would have reconsidered this idea after his second visit?
Answer: After his first day’s experience with a hack driver, the lawyer had considered returning to New Mulian to practice law. However, during his second trip, he realized that he was literally taken for a ride by the hack driver (who was Lukins himself). Lutkins was helped by the townspeople in this. After the city became a laughingstock, it is most likely that the lawyer would have reconsidered his initial idea of working there.
Question 5: Do you think the lawyer was gullible? How could he have avoided being taken for a ride?
Answer: It can be said that the lawyer was innocent. He could have avoided being taken for a ride if he had seen what the hack driver was doing. The hack driver was the one who did the whole thing and the lawyer remained only a spectator. By asking the hack driver to step aside and do his own work, the lawyer could control the proceedings. Instead, it allowed the hack driver to take control of the situation. The lawyer was very impressed with the pleasant and friendly personality of the hack driver, and was thus ignorant of what was really happening.
