Question 1: How did a book become a turning point in Richard Ebright’s life?

Answer: By the time Richard Ebright was in second grade, he had collected all twenty-five species of butterflies found around his hometown. According to him, this was probably the end of his butterfly collection. However, a book made him think otherwise. A book titled Tit the Travels of Monarch X ‘became a turning point in his life. This book was about how emperor butterflies migrated to Central America.This opened up the world of science to the keen young butterfly collector. At the end of the book, readers were invited to help study the butterfly migration. He has given Dr. Frederick A. Actively participated in tagging butterflies to help with the research being conducted by Urquhart. He went to raise a whole flock of butterflies in the basement of his house.Thus, it can be said that the book succeeded in keeping their enthusiasm alive by making them aware of the never ending possibilities in the world of science.

Question 2: How did his mother help him?

Answer: Richard Ebright’s mother helped him by encouraging his interest in learning. She took him on trips, bought him binoculars, microscopes, cameras, mounting materials and other equipment, and helped him in many other ways. If he had nothing to do, he got things to learn. Even the book that became a turning point in his life was given to him by his mother.Therefore, it can be said that his mother played an important role in the creation of the scientist.

Question 1: What lesson does Ebright learn when he does not win anything at a science fair?

Answer: When Richard Ebright could not win anything at the science fair, he realized that the winners had tried to conduct real experiments. On the other hand, he had just given a clean performance. He showed a slide of frog tissue under a microscope. It was the first time that he had any clue as to what real science is. This program worked to develop a competitive spirit in them. Ultimately; it was the spirit of enthusiasm and competition that inspired him to achieve new heights in science.

Question 2: What experiments and projects does he then undertake?

Answer: After losing at the science fair, Richard Ebright carried out various experiments and projects. For his eighth grade project, he tried to find the cause of a viral disease that killed almost all the Emperor Caterpillars every few years. He tried to elevate the caterpillar in the presence of a beetle because he thought the disease was caused by a beetle. He did not get any results.However, he went ahead and showed that he had tried the experiment, and this time he won. The following year, his science fair project was to test the theory that Viceroy butterflies mimicked the emperor to prevent him from being eaten by birds. His project was to see if the birds would eat the kings. He found that a starring simple bird would not eat food, but all the emperors who received it could eat it. The project was placed first in the Zoology Division and the third in the County Science Fair.

In his second year in high school, he began research to discover an unknown insect hormone. Indirectly, it also led to his new theory on the life of cells. He tried to find the purpose of twelve small gold spots on an emperor Pupa. Along with another outstanding science student, he created a device that revealed that the spots were producing hormones necessary for the butterfly’s full growth.The project took first place at the county fair and also entered the International Science and Engineering Fair, where it was voted third best in zoology.

As a high school junior, he continued his advanced experiments on Emperor Pupa. His project won first place at the International Science Fair.In his senior year, he developed cells from an emperor’s wing in a culture and showed that the cells would divide and develop into normal butterfly wing scales, when they were fed hormones from sleeping places.That project took the first place in zoology at the international fair.The summer after his freshman year at Harvard, Richard worked on hormones secreted from sleeping places, and was able to identify the hormone’s chemical composition. During his junior year, he got ideas for his new theory on the life of cells. Own room-mate, James R. With Wong, he worked on his theory and wrote a paper explaining the same.

Question 3: What are the qualities that go into the making of a scientist?

Answer: The author mentions three qualities that go into building a scientist – first-rate brains, curiosity and the will to win for the right reasons. Richard Ebright was a very intelligent student. He was also a champion debater, a public speaker, a good canonist, and an expert photographer. He always gave that extra effort. He was competitive, but for the right reasons.Previously he had a bright mind as well as a driving curiosity; And it was that curiosity that eventually led him to his theory about cell life.
