  1. How is our atmosphere different from the atmospheres on Venus and Mars?

Ans:

Earth’s atmosphere is made up of small amounts of different gases such as oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, water vapor as well as various gases, so it creates a balanced composition that is habitable compared to other planets. Planets like Venus and Mars have more than 95% carbon dioxide in the air which makes life impossible.

  1. How does the atmosphere act as a blanket?

Ans:

⇒ It maintains the consistency in temperature throughout the day making it a comfortable place to stay.

⇒ The ozone in the atmosphere is responsible for maintaining the temperature without letting the harmful ultra-violet ray effect.

  1. What causes winds?

Ans:

Uneven heating of the Earth’s surface is the main cause of winds. When heated, the air rises and therefore less pressure is created. Therefore air under high pressure causes air in the low pressure area.

  1. How are clouds formed?

Ans:

During the daytime, water evaporates in the presence of sunlight from wells, lakes, ponds, seas, rivers and various other sources and this water vapor rises up with hot air. At a particular altitude, the air is cold and the water vapor condenses to form minute droplets to form clouds.

  1. List any three human activities that you think would lead to air pollution’

Ans:

⇒ Burning of fuels like petroleum, kerosene, and coal in the atmosphere

⇒ The smoke released from manufacturing industries

⇒ Smoke from vehicles

  1. What is the greenhouse effect?

Ans:

Carbon dioxide and methane trap do not allow gases such as the sun’s radiation to return and thus generate heat in the atmosphere, resulting in a greenhouse effect.

  1. What are the two forms of oxygen found in the atmosphere?

Ans:

Oxygen is present in two form

⇒ Diatomic molecular form (O2)

⇒ Triatomic molecular form (O3)

  1. Why is the atmosphere essential for life?

Ans:

⇒ The atmosphere constitutes various main gases such as O2, N2 and CO2 which form the basis of living microorganisms, plants and animals.⇒ Photosynthesis is caused by the Earth’s atmosphere⇒ Earth’s constant temperature is the cause of Earth’s atmosphere⇒ The environment causes processes like respiration, burning and combustion.⇒ The atmosphere is the main reason for restricting UV rays in the Earth.

  1. Why is water essential for life?

Ans:

⇒ All the biological activities are respiration, digestion and other biological reactions are supported by water

⇒ Living beings are composed of more than 70% of water

⇒ Transportation of substances from one form to another takes place due to the presence of water.

  1. How are living organisms dependent on the soil? Are organisms that live in water totally independent of soil as a resource?

Ans:

All living organisms on Earth directly or indirectly depend on soil for a living. Plants receive water and minerals through the soil and prepare their food. Other organisms living in water are not completely independent of soil because germs that grow on soil in water are the primary producers. Primary producers are the main and main elements of the food chain. Various microbes found in soil help in decomposition of dead plants and animals in water which helps in returning nutrients and elements to the water.

  1. You have seen weather reports on television and in newspapers. How do you think we are able to predict the weather?

Ans:

Weather is studied using various statistics and facts with a collection of different instruments such as high and low temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind speed and relevant instruments. Therefore, on the data collected by meteorologists, we are able to forecast the weather.

  1. We know that many human activities lead to increasing levels of pollution of the air, water-bodies, and soil. Do you think that isolating these activities to specific and limited areas would help in reducing pollution?

Ans:

Human activities are the main cause of pollution in the air. Air is a means of spreading pollutants to various sources such as water and soil. Therefore we can say that by limiting activities at a certain place, air pollution will definitely be controlled to some extent.

  1. Write a note on how forests influence the quality of our air, soil and water resources.

Ans:

Air:

  • Forests help purify the air by absorbing all types of pollutants.
  • Forests help increase oxygen levels in the air by absorbing carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
  • Transpiration helps maintain the surrounding temperature and helps in the formation of clouds.

soil:

  • Plants in the forest block soil which causes soil erosion.

• Adds nutrients to the soil because many of the vegetation present in the forest is decomposed.Water:• Helps in increasing the water level in the forest            rainfall and underground level
