Question 1.
Where was Abdul Kalam’s house?
Answer: Abdul Kalam’s house was on the Mosque Street in Rameswaram.

Question 2. What do you think Dinamani is the name of? Give a reason for your answer.
Answer: Dinamani is the name of a newspaper and  Abdul Kalam tries to search the Second World War’s news in the headlines of this newspaper.

Question 3. Who were Abdul Kalam’s school friends? What did they later become?
Answer: Ramanathan Sastry, Aravindan and Sivaprakasan were his school colleagues or friends. Later on, Ramanathan Sastry became a preacher of the Rameswaram temple,  Aravindan went into the business of arranging conveyance for visiting pilgrims and Sivaprakasan became a catering contractor for the Southern Railways.

Question 4. How did Abdul Kalam earn his first wages?
Answer: Abdul Kalam earned his first salary by delivering newspapers.

Question 5. Had he earned any money before that? In what way?
Answer: Yes, he earned money before also. He used to obtain the tamarind seeds and trade them to a provision shop on Mosque Street. A day’s gathering would earn him the grand sum of one Anna.

Question 1. How does the author describe:

  1. The author characterizes his father as a wise and decent person. He felt glad when he helped others. He did not have much formal education and prosperity. He was a man of dignity and tremendous knowledge and wisdom. He evaded inessential enjoyments and frills.
  2. His mother was a courageous and kind-hearted loving woman who used to feed a great number of people. She also had all the characteristics of a typical Indian mommy.
  3. He was born into a middle-class Tamil residence. He was a small boy with fairly undistinguished looks, born to tall and handsome and wonderful parents and did his studies in physics and aerospace engineering and became a well-known scientist.

Question 2. What characteristics does he say he inherited from his parents?
Answer: The author inherited modesty and morality from his parents. He comprehended lessons in sincerity and honesty from his parents. He was self-disciplined because of his parents’ extraordinary life.

III. Discuss these questions in class with your teacher and then write down your answers in two or three paragraphs each.

Question 1.
“ On the whole, the small society of Rameswaram was very rigid in terms of the segregation of different social groups,” says the author.

  • Which social groups does he mention? Were these groups easily identifiable (for example, by the way, they dressed)?
  • Were they aware only of their differences or did they also naturally share friendships and experiences? (Think of the bedtime stories in Kalam’s house; of who his friends were; and of what used to take place in the pond near his house.)
  • The author speaks both of the people who were very aware of the differences among them and those who tried to bridge these differences. Can you identify such people in the text?
  1. Narrate two incidents that show how differences can be created, and also how they can be resolved. How can people change their attitudes?


  1. The author speaks about the people who belong to numerous castes and obey different religious preachings. Yes, these groups were effortlessly identifiable and their dressing, traditions, culture, and rituals varied.
  2. They did share their personal experiences and friendships. Lakshmana Sastry conjured the educator who separated the author and his buddy in the class and told him that he should not spread the venom of social inequality and communal discrimination in the minds of virtuous children.
  3. The school teacher motivated collective differences and Lakshmana Sastry and Sivasubramania Iyer dissuaded this malpractice.
  4. Persuasive people can do both things. A teacher has the proficiency to link collective differences and can play with the emotions of innocent and honest people. This is what the fresh teacher did. But the Science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer altered his wife’s behaviour and suggested her the right path.

Question 2.

  1. Why did Abdul Kalam want to leave Rameswaram?
  2. What did his father say to this?
  3. What do you think his words mean? Why do you think he spoke those words?


  1. Abdul Kalam wished to evacuate Rameswaram to study at the district headquarters in Ramanathapuram.
  2. His father said that he understood he had to go away to prosper and gave the illustration of a seagull and said that a seagull flies across the sun independently and without a nest.
  3. He talked about these words because he aimed to hone his skills. He understood the brutal truth of life that kids may have to live distant from their parents to make their careers and earn their livelihood. So he indicated his wisdom and intelligence in uttering these words.
