National Technology Day, celebrated on 11 May every year, is a reminder of India’s technological progress. On this day, India successfully test-fired the Shakti-1 nuclear missile in the Indian Army’s Pokhran test range in Rajasthan. The late President APJ Abdul Kalam was done by; it was called Operation Shakti or Pokhran-2. Two days later, as part of the operational force, India successfully tested two nuclear weapons. In a sense, National Technology Day highlights the importance of science in everyday life and encourages young people to take it as a career option.

In May 1974, the first nuclear test code, the ‘Smiling Buddha‘, was conducted by Shakti, the Pokhran nuclear test. The Nuclear Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is a global agreement signed by the UK, Russia, China, France and the US aimed at curbing the growth of nuclear weapons and achieving nuclear disarmament.



As we have seen above, at the nuclear test in Pokhran on May 11, 1998, based on these remarkable achievements of scientists and engineers, Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared May 11 as National Technology Day. Since 1999, every year, the Technology Development Board (TDB) has been celebrating the day with various technological innovations that have positively impacted the country. In addition, the TDB selects a topic every year and organizes competitions in the country. These days also show the importance of science in our daily lives.

On May 11, 1998, Indian Aerospace Engineer and late President Dr. Krishna Das During the operation, APJ Abdul Kalam successfully tested the Shakti-1 nuclear missile at the Pokhran test range of the Indian Army in Rajasthan. Two days later, as part of the same Pokhran-II / Operation Shakti initiative, the country successfully tested two nuclear weapons (the Pokhran-1 fired missile of 1974 and the smiling Buddha’s missile). Subsequently, the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared India a nuclear nation, becoming the sixth country to join the Nuclear Club of Nations, the first country not in favor of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) – the United States, Russia and China to promote the proliferation of nuclear weapons; Op Raptor expects the proposed international treaty.

Only then did India become the sixth nuclear state in the world. Hansa-3, the country’s first indigenous aircraft, flew in Bengaluru and conducted a nuclear test in Rajasthan. The Hansa-3 was a two-seater general aviation aircraft developed by the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) Lab. Pilot training, sports, observation, aerial photography, and environmental related projects.
This is not all. The Indian Army and Indian Air Force have been in service since May 11, 1998, the day after the final test fire of the Trident missile was completed by the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO). The short-range, rapid-response, surface-to-air (SAM) missile was part of India’s Integrated Guided Missile Development Program – a joint venture of the Ministry of Defense, created by Agni, Prithvi and Akash, a Missile system.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee has declared May 11 as National Technology Day in view of the great achievement of the country’s scientists, engineers and technicians. Every year since 1999, the Technology Development Board (TDB) commemorates the day in honor of technological innovations that positively impact the country. TDB selects a theme for each year’s event, and the theme of National Technology Day 2017 is ‘Technology for Inclusive and Sustainable Development’.

The National Technology Day TDB National Award is presented to this year’s Most Outstanding Individuals, Institutions and Businesses as a symbol of scientific inquiry and a quest for technical creativity and their translation into the intersection of science, society and industry. . This is a large-scale event attended by many scientific departments, including the Department of Science, Technology, Biotechnology, Ministry of Geology and the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research. The event in New Delhi presents the President of the nation to the President and presents many innovative products as the chief guest. In addition, many state governments are organizing regional events that bring together educational institutions, research organizations and NGOs to raise awareness of the latest technological advances in the country.



The day also marks the launch of Hansa-3, India’s first indigenous aircraft that flew in Bengaluru during a nuclear test in Rajasthan. Hansa-3 was developed by National Aerospace Laboratories. It was a two-seater and light general aviation aircraft used by flying firms for sports, pilot training, aerial photography, surveillance and environmental-related projects.
May 11, 1998 was also the day the Defense Research Organization (DRDO) completed the final test fire of the Trident missile, which was subsequently brought into service by the Indian Air Force and the Indian Army.

  • Plan to visit science and technology museums like the Nehru Planetarium and the National Science Center.
  • When your children are curious about anything related to science, answer them or help them find the answer.
