National Reading Day : Significance
Reading has a tremendous impact on the socio-economic growth of a country. A person’s, communitys’ and country’s progress is all dependent on their extensive knowledge base. Reading is necessary for firming the foundation of knowledge. The P.N. Foundation’s slogan is “Read and Grow.”
MH has launched a social media campaign called “#MyBookMyFriend” for this National Reading Day. The ceremony is held in India to honour the late Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker, popularly known as P.N. Panicker, the father of the Library Movement. In the 1990s, he was the reason behind the celebration and he initiated the popular cultural movement in Kerala, which resulted in universal literacy.
It is the 25th National Reading Day which India celebrates this year. The country honours a man who was not only responsible for the cultural movement in Kerala to promote reading, but also for the establishment of libraries in his native state.
Educators have the task of encouraging kids to read on National Reading Day. The day also encourages everyone to read more because it enhances concentration, vocabulary, and knowledge while also assisting in understanding many elements of society. In light of the epidemic, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is commemorating the day digitally.
As we commemorate National Reading Day 2021 today, let us consider its significance and how we may all participate electronically in commemorating PN Panicker’s death anniversary.
P.N. Panicker was born on March 1, 1909 he passed away on June 19, 1995. His significant contribution to the culture of reading is remarkable by all means as a result; the state of Kerala’s universal literacy rate reached 100 per cent in the year 1990, his death anniversary is commemorated as National Reading Day.
P.N. Panicker’s relationship with books

On March 1, 1909, in Neelamperoor, Kerala, he was born to Govinda Pillai and Janaky Amma. He had a significantly bigger impact as a teacher than many of his contemporaries. As a teacher in his community, he founded the Sanadanadharmam Library with the sole purpose of improving society with the only true tool — education.
This was only the first step. His efforts bore fruits and he was instrumental in the formation of the Travancore Library Association, or Thiruvithaamkoor Granthasala Sangham, in 1945. The association included a total of 47 rural libraries. The slogan of the Association, Read and Grow, encapsulated the significance of literature in a person’s life.
Panicker travelled around the state, preaching about the importance of reading in each village. He was able to bring around 6000 libraries into the network during his lifetime. Grandhasala Sangham was awarded the prestigious ‘Krupsakaya Award’ by UNESCO in 1975. He served as the association’s General Secretary for 32 years, until 1977.
Kerala’s Universal Literacy Rate and Panicker’s Initiatives
Panicker was disappointed by the political interference when the Sangham was taken over and turned into the Kerala State Library Council. As a result, he founded the Kerala Association for Non-Formal Education and Development – KANED.
Since his death on June 19, 1995, the amazing man and his life’s commitment to the promotion of reading and literacy has been commemorated in Kerala as reading day. The Kerala government declared the day Vaayanadinam, which translates to “Reading Day.” Panicker’s legacy is being honoured by the state through a week-long series of activities involving schools and the general public.
The National Reading Day is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. The week beginning June 19 will be designated as Reading Week in honour of the man and his message of “Read and Grow.” In addition, this year’s ‘Reading Month’ will take place from June 19 to July 18.
In light of the current circumstances, the P.N. Panicker Foundation has launched online reading activities, which can be accessed at pnpanickerfoundation.org/national-reading-month-2020.html. The CBSE has also requested that schools and instructors commemorate National Reading Day by hosting a variety of online activities for the students.
