National Day of Unity (Rashtriya Ekta Diwas)- Short Essay

The National Day of Unity (also known as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas) is celebrated to commemorate Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his birthday, who truly unified the country. Rashtriya Ekta Diwas or National Unity Day was introduced by the Government of India in 2014 to be celebrated every year on 31st October.

The purpose of introducing this day is to pay tribute to the iron man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, for his extraordinary work for the country. He worked hard to keep India united.

 

 

WHY RASHTRIYA EKTA DIWAS (NATIONAL UNITY DAY) IS CELEBRATED

 

The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, inaugurated Sardar Patel’s statue on this day in 2014 by paying floral tributes to and flagging off a program in New Delhi known as’ Run For Unity’. It was planned to highlight Sardar Patel’s efforts to unite the country. On this day, a nationwide marathon is organized to increase awareness about this day and also to remember the great personality.

The celebration of this occasion annually helps in creating awareness among the youth of the country and provides an opportunity to maintain the integral strength of the nation. It makes Indian citizens realize how national integrity helps in defeating the actual and potential threats for unity, security, and integrity of the nation.

 

ABOUT SARDAR VALLABH BHAI PATEL

 

He is also known as the Iron Man of India; Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel had worked hard to make India a United nation (Akhand Bharat). He also asked India’s people to live together with unity to create Shresth Bharat (Foremost India).

 

Sardar Patel was born in Karamsand, Gujarat, on October 31, 1875. His full name was Vallabhbhai Jhaverbhai Patel. He died in Bombay, India on December 15, 1950. He was a barrister, a statesman, an Indian National Congress leader and one of the founding fathers of the “Republic of India”. He worked hard to become a social leader for the country’s independence and people’s integration. To make India a newly liberated united country, his dedication to national integration was completely uncompromising. His dedication to uniting the country enabled him to integrate over 500 independent princely states through the 1947 Independence Act from the British rule to 1949.

Being India’s first home minister and deputy prime minister, he played a key role in integrating many Indian princely states to make India a federation. He made enormous efforts to restore nationwide peace. As he established the modern all-India service system, he is affectionately remembered as the “Iron Man of India” and “Patron Saint of Indian civil servants.”

 

HOW RASHTRIYA EKTA DIWAS (NATIONAL UNITY DAY) IS CELEBRATED

 

National Unity Day is celebrated by the Indian people by organizing various events. Every year, a floral tribute is given to Sardar Patel’s statue at Patel Chowk, Parliament Street, New Delhi.

The Indian government organizes various programs to mark the occasion, such as running for unity, pledging Indian police to take the march past ceremony.

 

The Run for Unity program takes place in major towns, districts, and various rural locations. The program involves the active participation of young from schools, colleges, universities, educational institutions, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme, etc. It is organized from Vijay Chowk to India Gate on the Rajpath at 8.30 am at a huge level in the National Capital.

 

The second program is mostly organized in government offices, public sectors, public institutions, etc. It is organized by genuinely taking the pledge in the group to observe the opportunity.

 

The third event that is organized on this day is police march past (including scouts, guides, NCC, NSS, home guards, etc.) on the streets of major cities and district towns. Somewhere after the police march past, also a pledge takes place.

 

Many cities’ municipal corporate employees and staff also participate in the National Unity pledge and later in the Unity Run. Students from different schools and colleges also perform a variety of cultural activities including banners and posters competition to spread the message of unity and security. Essay writing, speech recitation, quiz competition, paintings, rhyme recitation, art-making competition, discussion on related topics, etc. are also held at various schools and colleges.

 

The main goal of organizing a variety of programs on this day is to promote national integration among Indian citizens as well as to preserve the country’s unity and integrity.

 

The Ministry of Human Resource Development has requested that pledges be made to the schools and colleges to motivate students and maintain the country’s unity and integrity in the future. Thus, the Central Board of Secondary Education issued a notice to administer the commitment in the schools.

 

CBSE has appointed nearly 250 centers throughout India to organize the event in which more than 400-500 students from the neighbouring schools come to participate in the mass activities. Various activities play a major role in conveying the message about the importance of unity in maintaining peace, maintaining clean public places, security, removing threats, etc. in the country.

 

 

RASHTRIYA EKTA DIWAS PLEDGE

 

Following is the pledge for Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day):

 

“I solemnly pledge that I dedicate myself to preserve the unity, integrity, and security of the nation and also strive hard to spread this message among my fellow countrymen.

I take this pledge in the spirit of unification of my country which was made possible by the vision and actions of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. I also solemnly resolve to make my contribution to ensure the internal security of my country.”
