- A. P. J. Abdul Kalam
II. Following are the pointers for character sketch –
- He was the science teacher of Kalam.
- He was an orthodox Brahmin with a conservative wife.
- He was rebellious against the religious division of society and other social barriers.
- He took steps to break this social barrier by mingling students of different religions and varying backgrounds.
III. When Kalam entered the fifth standard at Rameshwaram Elementary school, his new teacher made him sit behind the class. The new teacher was strict about the religious division and did not accept a Hindu sitting with a Muslim boy. Kalam and his friend, Ramanadha Sastry, complained about this to their parents. Lakshmana Sastry, the father of Ramanadha and high priest, scolded the teacher and told him not to spill this sort of poison in society.
IV. He had a sister and three brothers.
V. During World War II, newspapers were thrown out of the train since trains used to be swamped and busy, and could stop at every station. Kalam’s cousin, Samsuddin, was the newspaper distributor of Rameswaram, so he had to collect newspapers from the moving train. Therefore, Kalam assisted Samsuddin to catch those newspapers leading to Kalam’s first salary.
