What is multi purpose river project
A multipurpose project (also known as a multipurpose river valley project) accomplishes multiple goals at the same time. A multipurpose project for dam construction across a river that serves more than one function at the same time can also be termed as a multipurpose project. It has a lot of benefits while still having some drawbacks.

It degrades marine life habitat because the dam floods off the vegetation and soil on both sides of the river, resulting in flood plains.

Construction of dams and regulation of rivers interrupt natural drainage, leading to poor sediment flow and excessive sedimentation at the reservoir’s bottom, leading to rockier stream beds and poorer conditions for river marine life.

Khadin is a form of an embankment that keeps water from flowing away. For water storage, people in Rajasthan built underground tanks known as tankas. They were linked to the houses’ sloping roofs through a conduit; the rainwater that fell on the rooftops flew through the pipe and was collected in underground tanks. Almost every house in Rajasthan’s semi-arid and arid regions, especially in Bikaner, Phalodi, and Barmer, had underground tanks or tankas for storing drinkable water.
How are modern modifications of traditional rainwater collection systems used to preserve and store water?
In India, traditional rainwater harvesting methods such as “the rooftop process” are gaining popularity. The rooftop rainwater harvesting system has been adopted by 200 households in Gendathur, Mysore, resulting in a village rich in rainwater. The state of Tamil Nadu has made rooftop rainwater harvesting systems mandatory for all homes. Defaulters face harsh penalties.
Rainfall harvesting is the collection and storage of rainwater rather than allowing it to run off the waste. Rainwater is collected from a roof-like surface and directed to a tank, cistern, deep pit, aquifer, or reservoir with percolation, where it seeps down and replenishes the groundwater supply.
