Class 9 Science Chapter 2 – Is Matter around us PureIn the previous article, we have discussed the properties of nonmetals and their properties. Now we will discuss Metalloids and Mixtures.
What Are Metalloids
Metalloids are the elements which are having a combination of some properties of metals along with some properties of nonmetals. Their properties are intermediate between the properties of metals and nonmetals, they are also called semi-metals.
Example: – Boron, Silicon, Germanium, etc
What Are Mixtures
A mixture is a substance which is made up of two or more elements Mixtures or compounds which are chemically not combined together.
Example: – Air is a mixture of gases like oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor, carbon dioxide, etc. The various gases of the air are not chemically combined with one another.
All the solutions are mixtures. The various substances present in a mixture are known as the constituents of the mixture or the components of the mixture.
Mixtures are usually of two types – homogeneous mixture and heterogeneous mixture.
Types of Mixtures
Homogeneous Mixture
Mixtures in which the substances are completely mixed together and are nonseparable from one another are called a homogeneous mixture.
A sugar solution is a mixture of sugar and water. It has the same sugar water composition and appears to be equally sweet. All the homogeneous mixtures are called solutions.
Example: – Sugar solution, salt solution.
Heterogeneous Mixture
A heterogeneous mixture does not have a uniform composition throughout the mass. It has visible boundaries of separation between constituents. In other words, those mixtures in which substances remain separate and one substance is spread throughout the other substances as small particles, droplets, or bubbles.
Example: – Oil and water mixture, soda water, lemonade, vinegar, brass, kerosene, copper sulphate solution, alcohol.
The suspensions of solids in liquids are also heterogeneous mixtures. A mixture containing two or more immiscible liquids is also a heterogeneous mixture.
Example – Mixture of petrol and water, Dyes, Petrol, chalk and water mixture, flour in water butter cheese.
What Are Properties of Mixture
- A mixture can be separated into its constituents by a physical process like filtration, evaporation, distillation, solvents, magnet etc.
- A mixture shows the properties of all constituents present in it.
- In the preparation of the mixture, energy is neither given out nor absorbed.
- A mixture does not have a definite melting point or boiling point.
- A mixture is usually heterogeneous except solution and alloys which are a homogeneous mixture
Now the last topic that we need to cover is Compounds which we will discuss in the upcoming article.
