What is a variable?

Variable is the distinguishing characteristic or factor among different algebraic equations.

What is an algebraic equation?

An algebraic equation is a mathematical equation that consists of multiple integer constants, algebraic operations and variables.

What is a linear equation? What are the types of linear equations?

Linear equations are algebraic equations of degree 1. It may contain only one single variable or more than one variable.

If it contains only one variable (eg. – x), it is called a linear equation in one variable, if it contains two variables (eg. – x & y), it is called a linear equation in two variables, and so on.

Therefore, linear equations are a combination of these variables and/or constants.

However, if a linear equation is drawn on a coordinate plane, it will always be a straight line.

I. Solve the following for X:

1. 3x + 12 = 24
2. (36x / 12) + (12 / 36x) = 30
3. 48x = 36 + 6x
4. 42x – 56 = 6x – 7
5. 11x = 121x + 10
6. 22x – 12 = 32 – 10x
7. 30x -15 = -(1/12) + (x/2)
8. 10x + 100 = 100
9. 55x – (11/64x) = 12x – (3/13)
10. 6x + 121 = 11x – (22/11x)

II. Ram has ₹ 32000. He spends 30% of “y” on food. If ₹ y is the cost of 10L of milk. The milk costs ₹ 32/L. Find how much did he spend on food?

III. Karn could only spend x% of the total money he had on clothes. If he spent ₹ 1000 on food, ₹ 2000 on daily necessities and ₹ 40 on chocolates and rest on clothes. If he had ₹ 5040, to begin with. Find the value of x.
