Fabrics are cloth or other material made from woven or knitted fibres.
What are different types of fibre?
Different types of fibre are:
- Natural fibres: Natural fibres are those that are derived from plants, animals, or minerals. Cotton and silk are among the examples.
- Synthetic fibres: Synthetic fibres, sometimes known as man-made fibres, are fibres created by humans by chemical synthesis as opposed to natural fibres, which are derived directly from living things. Eg – Nylon.

- Rearing – It is the process of taking care, feeding, providing medical care and breeding an animal.
- Shearing is the process of removing the fleece with a thin layer of skin of the sheep.
- Sorter’s disease is a fatal blood disease caused by a bacterium called Anthrax. It is prevalent in the Wool industry.
- Sericulture is the process of rearing silkworms to obtain silk.
- Reeling silk is the process of taking out threads from the cocoon for use as silk.
- Following steps are followed for processing wool:
- Step 1: Shearing – It is the process of removing the fleece with a thin layer of skin of the sheep.
- Step 2: Scouring – It is the process of washing sheared hair in tanks to remove the grease, dirt and dust.
- Step 3: Sorting – It is the process of separating different textures of hair in the factory.
- Step 4: Cleaning of burrs – The process of removing small fluffy fibres from the hair is called cleaning of burrs. The hairs are scoured again.
- Step 5: Dyeing – Since the original colours of fibres are black, white or brown, dye is applied to the fibres, and this process is called dyeing.
- Step 6: Rolling – Fibres are straightened, combed and then rolled into a yarn.
