Forest
• It is the large area of land thickly covered with plants, trees, bushes, etc. It is a system that comprises plants, animals, and micro-organism.
• The various component of the forest is interdependent on one another. In the forest, there is an interaction between soils, water, air, and living organism.
• Forest is a lifeline between forest-dwelling communities.
• Forest influences climate, water cycle, and air quality.
• It is full of life and vitality.
Why forest is called green lungs?
Forests are also known as green lungs as plants release oxygen through the process of photosynthesis. Plants help to provide oxygen for animal respiration. They also balance the oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Trees
The trees are the uppermost layer of the forest followed by the shrubs, the herbs to the lowest layer of vegetation. The different layer of vegetation provides food and shelter for animals, birds, and insect.
Canopy
Canopy is the uppermost layer of the trees in the forest forming the more or less continuous layer of foliage.
Importance of Forest

• It protects the soil and provides habitat to a large number of animals.
• It helps in bringing good rainfall in neighboring areas.
• It provides timber.
• It purifies the air.

Deforestation
Cutting down of trees is referred to as deforestation.
Effects of deforestation
• It improves the amount of carbon dioxide in the air thereby increasing the effect of global warming.
• Animals will not get food and shelter.
• Soil will not hold water that will cause the flood.
• Endangers lives and the environment.
Conservation of forest
- Protect wildlife.
- Do not allow overgrazing.
- It promotes afforestation.
- Controls forest fires.
Food chain
The food chain shows the transfer of material and energy from one species to another within an ecosystem.
Organisms are grouped into trophic levels. Trophic levels are various steps in the food chain at which the transfer of food takes place.
Food web
It consists of many interconnected food chains.
