In this article, we are going to discuss Food and Food Variety from Class 6 Science. As we all know food is necessary for survival and all living things i.e., plants, animals, and human beings need food. There is diversity in food among animals and human beings. If we see around us even we can’t eat the same food in our life.So, here we are trying to explain the variety of food for all living beings.
Food: For growth, work and repair all living things need energy and food is a source of energy.
Food Variety: A Food Variety is that we eat consists of different ingredients. Each ingredient comes from different sources such as plants and animals. Plants are the food source for vegetables, fruits, seeds, oil, and spices. Animals are the food source for milk, oil, meat, and eggs.
Example: for preparing any dish like vegetable curry, the following ingredients are required vegetables, spices, salt, water.
Sources of Food Materials
There are two main sources of food: Plants and Animals
Food from plant source: wheat, Rice, fruits, vegetables, sugar, chocolate, etc. are obtained from the plant. We get food items from certain parts of different plants like flower, roots, leaves, stem and seeds.
Following table shows the following food get from the parts of the plant.
Part of the plant | Food |
Root | Radish, potato, turnip, sweet potato, beetroot, etc |
Stem | In certain plants, stem grows underground and store food. Ginger, potato and onion etc. |
Leaf | Spinach, lettuce, trigonella, etc |
Fruits | Apple, Guava, mango, papaya, orange, etc. |
Seeds | Seeds of many plants are used to extract oil. Mustard seeds for mustard oil, sunflower, soyabean, etc. |
Following food items are processed further for ready to consume like Sugar, Coffee, tea. Sugar we get from sugarcane, coffee from coffee beans, tea from tea leaves.Plants also offer various other spices like pepper, cardamom, ginger, turmeric, cloves, cumin, etc.

Food from animal source: Milk, eggs, meat, chicken, yogurt, fish, butter, cheese, honey, etc.
Cow and buffaloes give milk, hen and ducks give eggs, fish, goat, chicken, hen give meat. Eggs and meat are rich in protein.
The honeybee produces honey from the nectar of flowers. It is a source of glucose, minerals, and enzymes.

Modes of Nutrition:
Autotrophs: By the process of photosynthesis, plants make their food themselves so they are called autotrophs.
Heterotrophs: Animals and humans do not make their food. They eat food prepared by plants or by eating other animals. Heterotrophs are divided into four types on the basis of their food habit.
- Herbivore
- Carnivore
- Omnivore
- Scavengers
- Herbivores: Animal which eat only plant products like grass, leaves, etc are called Herbovores. Example of Herbivores –Cow, Elephant, Camel, Deer, Goat, etc.
- Carnivores: Animals which eat the flesh of other animals are called carnivores. Example of carnivores – Lion, jackal, frog, tiger, lizard, snake, etc.
- Omnivores: Animals which eat both plants and meat are called omnivores.Example of Omnivores –Crow, monkey, bear, human, sparrow, etc.
- Scavengers: Some animals which eat the flesh of dead animals are called Scavengers.
