‘Healthy is not a goal, it’s a way of living’ or ‘Your body is a finely tuned vehicle, give it good fuel and it will take you places’ these are the proverbs on health, both represent the importance of food in our life. A balanced diet is an important part of maintaining good health and can help you feel your best.In this article, we are trying to explain Balanced Diet, Nutrients for our body and importance of exercise and rest from Class 5 Science.
The food that we eat is our diet. A Balanced Diet contains all the nutrients in the correct quantities. A meal containing small quantities of different vegetables is healthier than a meal with large quantities of food with a single vegetable. Think what would happen if your body does not get a particular nutrient at all?
Pyramid Of Food Chart
A food pyramid tells us what to eat to make our diet a healthy one. The different colored stripes represent different food groups. The food items at the bottom of the pyramid are meant to be eaten in much greater quantity than those at the top of the pyramid of food chart.
The nutritional requirements of a person depending on age, gender, and the nature of work the person does. A young person doing manual work requires more energy than an old lady who generally stays indoors. So, the old’s lady requirement for carbohydrates is less than that of the person doing manual work. A person who works in the office and sits most of the time must eat less of fat and carbohydrates. So, different people have different dietary requirements.
A typical balanced diet for school children should include the following:
- Rice, chapattis, whole wheat bread or maize in each meal.
- Three servings of milk or equivalent amounts of curd, cheese, and other milk products in a day.
- Plenty of seasonal fruits and vegetables each day.
- Beans, peas, nut, eggs, small amounts of fish, and meat.
- A little fat (oil and butter)
- Six to eight glasses of fresh drinking water.

Nutrients
Our body needs special substances called nutrients that are present in the food we eat. There are 5 types of nutrients. All are essential for the growth and development of our body. Different foods have different nutrients.
Carbohydrates and Fats
Carbohydrates and fats give energy to our body. Rice, wheat, sweet potato, bread, and bananas are a rich source of carbohydrates. Fats are found in ghee, oil, cheese, butter, and nuts.
Proteins – Body building nutrients.
Proteins help in growth. They also help in repairing the tissues of the body and in healing small cuts and wounds. Milk, eggs, meat, curd, soya bean, fish, and pulses are rich in proteins.
Vitamins and Minerals – Protective nutrients
Vitamins keep our body fit and help it to resist diseases. Vitamin A, B,C,D,E, and K are some of the vitamins our body needs. Fresh fruits and vegetables, eggs, and fish are good sources of vitamins.
Minerals help our body to grow well and develop properly. Iron, iodine, and calcium are some minerals required by our body. Milk, green leafy vegetables, and fruits are rich sources of minerals.
Food that we get from plants contains fibres or roughage. Our body does not digest roughage. Roughage helps the body to get rid of undigested food. Green leafy vegetables, carrot, and cucumber contain roughage.
