CBSE Class 6 Mathematics Symmetry Worksheet
This worksheet is for class 6 maths, comprising the topic of symmetry. It will help students develop a better understanding of symmetry, which is a concept in Geometry.
The worksheet completion will allow students to answer the following questions:
- What is symmetry?
- Write all types of symmetry.
- What do you mean by asymmetrical shapes?
1 . What is symmetry?
Symmetry is a term very commonly used in Geometry that denotes a line or plane that may be traced across a line or a point so that the two sides are mirror images of each other.
Let’s understand this with an example – Take an A4 size sheet and fold it in half vertically. When you open the sheet back up, you will notice that the sheet has been divided into 2 equal halves on either side of the crease. That is essentially what symmetry is.
In fact, now that you know about symmetry, you will be able to trace so many examples around you. Moreover, half the magic that magicians do is closely related to the concept of symmetry, so the next time you go see a magic show, be careful to keep an eye out for such a fun mathematical concept!
2. Mention the types of symmetry.
The four types of symmetry are:
- Rotational symmetry
- Reflection (or reflexive) symmetry
- Glide symmetry
- Translation symmetry
3. What do you mean by asymmetrical shapes?
There exist some kinds of shapes that can never be split into identical halves or portions for them to have symmetry. Such shapes are called asymmetrical shapes, basically the opposite of symmetrical shapes.
A parallelogram, for example, is an asymmetrical form because it lacks a symmetry line. So why don’t you also try to find some asymmetrical shapes around you?
1.Fill in the blanks:
- The number of capital letters of the English alphabets having no line of symmetry is ___________.
- The number of lines of symmetry in a regular hexagon is______.
- Digits with only two lines of symmetry are ______ and __________.
- The number of lines of symmetry in a square and a rectangle is ___________.
2. Match the following:
Shape | Number of symmetry lines |
Equilateral triangle | 5 |
Rectangle | 6 |
Regular hexagon | 3 |
Regular pentagon | Infinity many |
Circle | 0 |
Scalene triangle | 2 |
3. Some drawing tools are there in the geometry box, observe them and complete the following table:
Tool Name | Number of symmetry lines |
Triangular piece with unequal sides
The Compasses | |
The Divider | |
The Protractor | |
Triangular piece with two equal sides
The Ruler
