CBSE Class 2 English Worksheets Question Papers One and Many
One and Many : Grammar is the set of rules in a language that changes the form of words and joins them into sentences. Grammar is now seen, not simple as theory, but as an instrument that enables language use. To make the learning of grammar as an enjoyable process, we have introduced CBSE Class 2 Video Classes, activities and printable Worksheets for Class 2 English. In this blog, we share the spelling rules used in the concept of One and Many.
When there is only one of a naming word (noun), it is said to be a singular noun.
When a noun shows more than one, it is said to be in the plural.
We can add –S, -es, -ves or ies to show that there is more than one noun. For example, we say many birds, four biscuits, six brushes.
But for the students of Class 2, it’s very difficult and confusing to understand where to use s, es, ves or ies in the form of many.
Don’t worry, it looks difficult, but it is very easy as in grammar each concept has a set of rules that need to practice.
- Noun ending with –s, -x, -o, -sh, -ch, and –ss form plurals by taking –es.
Look at these pairs of words:
Bus – Buses
Brush – Brushes
Box – Boxes
Church – Churches
Class – Classes
Potato – Potatoes
- Now, look at these pairs of words.
Wife, thief, life. These words do not form the plurals by adding –s or –es.
Wolf – Wolves
Knife – Knives
Scarf – Scarves
Loaf – Loaves
Thief – Thieves.
The f or fe at the end has changed to -ves.
- A noun ending with –y become plural by replacing the -Y with –ies. Example
Family – Families
Lily – Lilies
Cherry – Cherries
Candy – Candies
Lady – Ladies
But there are some nouns that do not follow any of the above spelling rules when they form their plurals.
Child – Children
Goose – Geese
Mouse – Mice
Sheep – Sheep
Deer – Deer
Ox – Oxen
Man – men
Woman – Women
