BODMAS Important topic of CBSE Class 5 Maths
BODMAS rule is applicable in our day to day life for calculation and accounting purpose. In India we use BODMAS and in the USA we use PEDMAS (Parentheses, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, and subtraction)
BODMAS
It is the sequence which is used for solving mathematical equations and formulas. It is referred to as an order of mathematical operation. This rule is applied in the operation where more than one formula is used.
Mathematical operation refers to the addition, subtraction division etc.
B- Bracket () {} []
O- Order of power and roots
D- Divide
M- Multiply *
A- Addition+
S- Subtraction-
Note:
- Move from left to right to apply the rule
- Divide and multiply are ranked equally in an equation.
- Add and subtraction are ranked equally in an equation
Simplification of bracket
It is an expression which means expansion of brackets. Here distribution law of multiplication over addition or subtraction is used.

How to use BODMAS
Example 1
(6+10) x 5
How to calculate
solve inside the bracket first 6+10 =16
solve mathematical of 16 x 5=80
Example 2
3 of 5 + 12
How to calculate
Solve of 3 x 5=15
Solve addition 15+12=27
Example 3
20/5 x 1/2= ??
We know division and multiplication work equally and order of calculation will be done from left to right.
How to calculate
20/5=4
4 x 1=4
4/2=2
Note – first division then multiplication as per the order of ranking from left to right. In the last addition will be done.
Example 4
We know addition and subtraction works equally and order of calculation will be done from left to right.
12+10-5+7
How to solve
12+10=22
22-5=17
17+7=24
Condition x + (y + z) = x + y + z
Rule – Open the bracket and add the terms
Condition x – (y + Z) = x – y – z
Rule – Open the bracket and multiply the negative sign with each term inside the bracket. (All positive terms will be negative and vice-versa)
Condition x (y + Z) = x y + xz
Rule – Multiply term outside with each term inside the bracket
