NUMBER SYSTEM (Basics)
The number system is the most important chapter which a student should go through without moving further in the quantitative aptitude section. In this chapter, we come across many basic topics of which the candidate should have a thorough knowledge.
Numbers are broadly classified into two categories:
- Real Numbers
- Imaginary Numbers
Further, Real numbers are also classified into two categories:
- Rational Numbers
- Irrational Numbers
Rational Numbers are further classified as:
- Fractions
- Integers
We classify integers into three categories as:
- Negative Integers
- 0 (Neither negative nor positive)
- Positive Integers

Prime numbers: Numbers which have exactly 2 factors namely 1 and the number itself): Eg: 2, 3, 5, 7, 11.
Composite numbers: Numbers which have more than 2 factors or we can say all numbers which are not prime except 1 are Composite Numbers. Eg: 4,6,8,9.
Note: i. 1 is neither prime nor composite.
- 2 is the only even prime number.
iii. Every prime number except 2 & 3 can be expressed in the form of (6k+1) or (6k-1).
where k is an integer.
- If a number ‘N’ is not divisible by any prime number less than, then N is a prime
Number.
Relative primes or Co-prime: Those pair of Numbers which do not have a common factor other than 1. Eg: 3 and 8, 15 and 16.
Perfect numbers: If the sum of all the factors excluding itself (but including 1) is equal to the number itself, then we call such number as a perfect number. E.g. 6, 28
